Recommend an oil pump to fill an AQ270 please?

I bought this one, but it only managed to cover me, and the boat in oil, and only got a tiny amount in the drive.
I finally gave up and went home after it injected a blast of oil deep inside my boot

I think the problem is that it's more designed to pump oil out of a sump rather than in to an outdrive despite the assurances of the Chandlers where I bought it from.
Can anyone recommend something that will definitely do the job?

I was going to suggest an outboard gearbox filling pump as well

They are normally supplied with a fitting to screw into an outboard drain hole, because outboards ( and I believe Mercruiser outdrives ) are filled from the bottom but provided you can cut that off and stuff the tube into the filling hole it should work.

Have you removed the dipstick to allow air to vent as you fill it ? Or is there a small vent screw that can be removed?

On the 270 you do fill through the dipstick hole. More or less the same as the 280 that we had on our last boat. I just used to use a measuring jug and pour the oil in. IIRC it uses the same oil as the engine so its not as if its thick. Using a jug to measure it out takes away the quess work of pumping and dipping to see if the level is correct.

One of the illustrations in the owners manual shows an oil filler under the cover over the shift mechanism.

I'm glad that some good came from my misery!
I imagine that the sight of me hunched over the outdrive, eyeballs popping with the strain of trying to force oil through that inadequate pump punctuated with the occasional badly stifled expletive as yet another oil fountain shot into the air would've been extremely funny.
Mind you, I'm glad that the only other guy in the yard had the decency not to crumple into a shaking ball of mirth after my failed attempts as I really wasn't in the mood at the time!

Yes, I did remove the dipstick. Not initially though, I thought I'd discovered the reason for my failure when I suddenly twigged but it made no difference

No, apparently the dipstick hole should only be used for top-ups, not filling it.

As above, apparently on the 270 you can't do that, I guess because it would take the oil too long to disperse into the lower assembly?

Yes, that's where the oil filler is.
The only video I managed to find on youtube is a 280, and that's being filled through the oil drain hole.

Quick update, for the benefit of anyone searching on this thread in the future.

Just spoken to Volspec to order replacement O rings for the dipstick and oil drain plug, and the fibre washer for the oil filler plug.
They fill with fresh oil through the dipstick hole using a funnel but do it very slowly to avoid air locks.

As my swim platform is in the way, the pump will be the easiest way for me to fill the thing, I'll just pump it in slowly from the top (assuming I can leave a gap for the air to come out!)
