Anyone got a ball park price for rechroming a pair of hefty winches (Barlow 26)

Cheers

I had mine done some years ago and it was less than £50/winch. If you do have them done make sure they understand the drum is supposed to be bumpy and they are not to polish them smooth. Fundamental you would think but it happened to mine.

Not sure where is local to you but at the end of last year I had a pair of Lewmar 44 winch drums done for a similar price to geem above. The process included effectively unplating them first before a three layer plating process was applied. They were in a state where chrome was peeling off in finger nail sized pieces and leaving a green looking drum.

I took mine to JA Finishing Services Ltd in Fareham. 01329 822990. Half a season later and they have been used for a few hundred miles of spinnaker work yet still look as good as new.

Perhaps I should mention they have an ex Lewmar employee there and they do know what is needed.

Thanks chaps . will now have to find a local plater .
Many thanks

Hi clyst,

My son deals with chrome plated marine products (Kahlenberg ship's horns) and sometimes receives requests for re-plating. The main cause for the need to re-plate is almost always found to be due to the user having used a stainless steel polish on them which, with its abrasive nature, gradually destroys the plating.

So just in case you use stainless steel metal polish (and please forgive me for teaching gran to suck eggs), don't, and instead use a dedicated chrome polish. These don't have abrasives in them. Once polished, wash to remove traces of the polish and then wax using a carnuba wax. This will keep the plating looking good for many years.

And just in case you're wondering, my son's company only offers a re-plating service for Kahlenberg horns, so this isn't an advert for your plating needs!
