• Both trim cylinders from the stern drive (on kad44EDC) are leaking hydraulic oil. Water is found in the oil

• The starboard wiper does not move, the motor runs

• Some traces of leaks found at the exhaust elbow, connections and pipes (no mention of a turbo prob in the report)

• The display from the trim flaps does not show any changes but the trim flaps are functioning well

tnx

Leaking trim Rams can be problematic. Worst case scenario, the engine/s have to come out. New cylinders are about £500 each and you have two per drive. Best case, remove end caps and replace seals. Price about £50 per drive plus labour.

Or if you are a bit handy you can replace the seals in the trim rams yourself. Cost for the seal set around £35.

The OH has just done one of ours. Took about half an hour.

Rams are out of the water job so pointless to not do all the other jobs at the same time including exhaust/drive shaft bellows both sets of steering fork seals. Also need to do the oil change and possibly replace propshaft seals.
Also need to hope no water damage to lift pumps and that 4 new hydraulic rams are not required.
Need to get worst case scenerio and negociate accordingly.?
Sealine at our club with similar set up and problems several thousands.

I understand the rest of your statement but why would the engines have to come out?

Ok, boat is in holland and not simple to check if the work has all been done correctly.
I would rather bring her to the U.K. as she is now and fix the issues here.
For that to be negotiated I need some idea of cost.

The cost of jobs you list sounds likely to be labour loaded rather than parts - and labour costs can vary wildly by geography. Where would you expect to get the work done? By all means ask the broker, but if he is in Holland, don't take too much notice of his answer if you expect to get the work done in the UK. Even in this country, you could get significantly different answers from a yard in the Hamble and a yard somewhere up north. Run the list of jobs past the boat yard where you would expect to get them done.

To get the cylinders out, you need to remove pins from inside. Some boat builders provided the small cut outs on the inside of the transom that allow this. Others didn't. If ts one of the latter, the engines may need to be removed to get the pins out.

does this help in deciding on the replacement / fix of seals on the OD stearing rams ?

Ok thanks for that seems like a poor design when you need to remove the engines to replace a part that is quite common to have to replace.
Hope I've not got one of the boats you are referring to

I have, that's how I know about it. Luckily I managed to fix the problem by changing the seals from the outside but if I ever need to replace a whole ram I am in a world of pain.

Simon. That's the same drive as I have and I have replaced the seals to fix this kind of leak. Obviously, once you start to take the rams apart you may find other problems that mean more work. For example, if the rams themselves are pitted and corroded, which is quite likely, you will need to either repair or replace them. I went for a repair which involved re-coating them with a hard chrome and grinding them back down to size. This was a job for a precision engineering outfit. The other problem you may find, although less likely, is scoring on the inside of the cylinder. This really means complete replacement, which requires removal of the pins inside, This is a tricky job at the best of times and, as already mentioned, may require engine removal if the cutouts are not in place on the transom.
