We plan to rent the house and Liveaboard for 6 months before setting off on a trip. The boat will be in a marina for that time, what do most people do about receiving post?

Thanks!

in spain and I should imagine a few of the med countries you can collect your mail from the local PO, you normally address it as 'lista de correos', 'poste restante' etc

However, the post to Spain can take at least a week and sometimes much longer. The rellies route is the best.

We are not in quite the same position as we still own a house in UK. Before we began half-year cruising we made every possible effort to transfer anything that might arrive by post to e-mail or internet. This leaves a few communications that drop through the letter box but none of these has ever been urgent and we deal with them when we return home. Otherwise we find a huge pile of magazines and bumf that we work through for next few months. So reception by the 'friends or relatives' option would seem best if we did not have an address in UK.

We had quite a lot go missing when relying on marinas to receive post. Better have it sent or redirected to a relative who can scan and email anything important.

Registering a new address was the only thing which worked for me.

The most important communication will have 'DO NOT REDIRECT' on the envelope. So it WILL NOT be re-directed, no matter what you do.

Happened to me; Council Tax Bill was not re-directed (in spite of paying £100.00 to the PO for re-direction). It bounced back to their office. By pure chance I phoned them from Portugal as I realised that nothing have come out on standing order/direct debit. The nice lady said that there was a summons in the out tray to be posted that day!

I paid the lot with my debit card straight away.

Ironically, the summons would also have said 'DO NOT REDIRECT' so God knows what would have happened then.

The problem is (IME) no matter how willing people seem to take your mail or let you use their address, after a while they get a bit cheesed off with it - particularly elderly parents. It is not an easy question to answer.
