Rebedding windows

Similar to another thread, I am in the process of removing the windows from my Fisher 25 as they are leaking

The frames have an outer flange where the fixings go through the fibreglass and into an inner frame - the fixings are rivets, with the exception of one window which is screwed (maybe this window has been replaced in the past)

The intention is to remove the windows (possibly get them refurbished to reseal the glass/frame junction) and to rebed them using butyl

The questions are:

1. Do I apply the butyl over the fixing holes and fix through it, or should it be located outside the fixing holes?

2. Should I use rivets again or screws?

My windows came back from being refurbished with Scapa 3507 bedding tape attached. It covered all predrilled holes in the frames. My frames were attached with self tapping screws, about 3" between centres and each corner had one screw hole. I just worked the self tappers straight through the seal. The clamping force was quite significant and I clamped the frame until the Scapa 3507 just formed a bead proud of the frame. The windows have been in place for a few years now with no leaking.

The aluminium frame halves were assembled using aluminium screws originally and on refurbishment.

I also used Hadlow Marine to fully refurbish the windows although it is a task that a competent DIYer could probably undertake if they have the time.

The picture below shows the bedding tape thickness relative to the frame and that it is applied more or less across the full width of the flange.

I've heard many endorsements of Hadlow for window refurbished but it's not difficult to do yourself although it takes time to do properly.

Scapa 3507 Bedding Tape

You can buy Scapa bedding tape in 3mm and 6 mm thickness from this eBay site: -

I've heard many endorsements of Hadlow for window refurbished but it's not difficult to do yourself although it takes time to do properly.

Some good info on Hadlows site but I differ on the way to seal the glass into aluminium frames. Instead of putting the glass in dry and pumping in sealant, I find it easier and less messy to half fill the rebate with sealant, then put the glass in and assemble the two parts of the frame.

The Scapa Tape looks good

I'm worried that if I use screws that the only mechanical fixing will be to the inner frame (which is a hollow box section, and the walls are very thin maybe 1mm at best) as the screws will not grip the fibreglass hull side?

I don't have a frame to bother with, but my new window acrylic will not have the 45 screw holes - I am going to use 3M Very High Bonding tape.
