Hi All,

I'm looking for a waterproof iPad case suitable for use in the cockpit as a chart plotter, I've seen some very expensive ones on the market (in the region of £100+) but looking for something a bit more reasonable.

I do appreciate you get what you pay for, but wondered if anyone could comment on what they use?

I've seen this one on eBay which is IPX7 rated for less than £30: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140990850736?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT which I might go for, just interested in anyone's experiences with them?

Why do they show a broken one in the advert?

I use the Aquapac, which is a bit different as it is a soft wallet with a shoulder strap. I find this useful in the cockpit as the strap can be hooked over a winch for security. The screen is reasonably easy to view except in sunlight and I think it came out well in an early YM test. In the same price range.

Thanks for your replies, I've found some manufacturer refurbished Lifeproof cases for under £40, so I'm assuming they would be genuine ones, looking at the video they don't give any protection to the screen, I'm assuming you can use a screen protector to prevent scratches?

I've used an Aquapac-type one for a season. I find that it's usable but awkward. It protects the iPad well enough. My main problem is that often I can't see the screen in the cockpit even on full brightness, so I have to retreat to the cabin to use it anyway.

I had a similar experince. Whats more it was useless in the rain when tapping the screen either brought no result or a random one.

I have the life proof case .Works well for knocks .Has screen cover when not in use and a ram mount bracket to hold it.
Screen is vulnerable I suppose but then most Gps screen are too to direct blows.
The main problem with a covered screen is that it's very difficult to see in bright sunlight ,and in rain doing anything in the drips is a bit erratic .:)

we have been using a cheap waterproof cover/bag thingy with a sealed top. it's ok, but given that the ipad will be our main plotter and that it is a bargain, i've bought a lifedge case which has a cover for the screen - main driver is finding something that allowed us to leave the ipad charging whilst using it as a nav. The case seems great - won't be using it in anger until later this month. have bought a bracket as well and mounted the whole thing on a swivelling mount which sits in the companionway.

decided that we were saving so much wonga on a plotter that it was worth splashing out on a decent case - after all the ipad is 400 quids worth of kit and that it was so great that it deserved decent protection despite the cost

I have a nice, basic soft case for my tablet which I bought from my local RNLI station for around a tenner. It seems well made and works fine.
