Reasonable Security Cameras

Perhaps a bit PBO...

Maplin have a clearance on some of their stuff... including a B&W dual UV camera kit with a 5" monitor for just under £40... so I bought one ... UV effective up to 3M...Screen is admittedly CRT, but for that price you cannot really argue. 18 metres of cable for the cameras,which have a 40 degree viewing angle (one dome included).

My thought is to put one (or both) in the engine compartment and/or one under radar arch in dome as additional aid during stern berthing... if it works, then great!!.... if not I'll put it at the front door of the house ... or perhapseven better install it for MIL at her front door as extra security for her.... for the price I cannot fault the unit which gives OK quality pictures...

You got a link to it Alf, Might be useful for the back of our truck, so as driver can double check no-one walks behind him.
Is it 12/24v or 240v?

Cannot find the link on their website ... was in the clearance catalogue from last week ... I just walked in and found it and thought it good value, so bought one set... £39.99

Call you local shop and ask ... time adjustable or forced camera switch and connectable to Video/dvd recorders. Note that the camera's are notwaterproof, so you'd need to seal the dome somehow if you intend to use it on a truck..

240 -12V converter included and monitor states max 13.6V ... so should run on 12V. however a low 1.5W @240V consumption means you can run a mini converter to ensure stable 12V supply without spikes/drops.

This might do the job, I keep having a look at these things every now and then for when I eventually get the boat finished, hence the reason I have a link. Any way have a look here.

That's nice too ... and colour.... Only problem I seei s that each of the camera's are mains powered, and in an engine room the wireless may be suseptible to the electro-magnetic field generated by the alternator(s)... and you'll need a monitor of sorts...

Good points,
I hadn't spotted there was no monitor, but I had seen them some time ago and was thinking of linking into monitor at the helm.
Had not thought about engine bay usage though, would you not need one with a LOWSAT camera or Infra red?

What I really want is to find USB waterproof cameras then they could be located at various points around the boat, useful for security or docking!

Problem wit USB & PC's is that you may struggle for programmes that can handle more than 1 x camera... hence my reason for trying the cheap B&W IR (sorry said UV before) route... If that is successful, I can look at the LCD, 4x colour camera + systems out there .... if I need or want to....but they are about £450 right now which to me is a bit OTT for proof of concept...

Very true though it is well over the top, considering other such systems around, but it could because it is 'a system' that the cost is what it is. If you can get the individual parts and then link them your self it might be a better route. As for multiple screens with a PC I think that maybe IP cameras would do the job as there are loads of security systems out there now which use IP addressed cameras and these can linked into a PC or monitor for that matter. So I need to start looking for wireless waterproof cameras . . .

This camera works in colour in daylight and in B/W using IR at night - distances and fields of view are good for bathing platforms.
IMO they look MUCH better than the conventional ones that Raymarine use. And are nearly a quarter of the price.

But they also do cameras a lot cheaper to test the concept.

I've had one of their submersible bullet cameras for a few years now. You have to make sure that the power supply is stabilised at 12v but other than that they're great.
Unfortunately, I dropped mine (from about 6 feet) a couple of days ago - went down with a crash and hasnt worked since - anyway its so usefull that I'v bought another one. Currently looking through light fittings above ceiling panels with it.
