This am SWMBO and I stood in the garden and pulled the tags on our old Crewsaver manual jackets. The cylinders are at least seven years old and quite corroded, although we manually inflated the jackets two years ago.

Anyway, both went satisfyingly pop and inflated perfectly. Left them for eight hours or so to make sure they weren't leaking then fitted new cylinders. Dead easy to repack them as well, and we tested the whistles for good measure.

An easy job for peace of mind, total cost £20 including free delivery for the two cylinders. (From AQUATOGS )

Why am I posting this? Because it was easy, cheap and had a relatively high feelgood factor. Not so often these three come together in the yacht maintenance universe, so if your old jackets haven't been serviced for a while why not give it a go?

(Ducks and waits for flack about unnecessary and patronising safety posts, accusations of being in the pay of Aquatogs and similar Scuttlebuttery, but note still grinning - no bad smell here Bob!)

I hope you notified the Orange Equipment Police of your proposed inflation of unlicensed ships stores before you let rip on the public.
You've even admitted letting them be displayed in public gaze for 8 hours apparently without getting them wet.
And there is no use pretending it only cost 20 quid. Tch... anyone knows that refurbishing any Orange Equipment must be left to qualified staff where the P & P comes to more than 20 quid. All in all I think it's highly irresponsible of you to even attempt this publicity seeking stunt.
If you had wanted to save money that badly, you could have rubbed the old cylinders with a brillo pad and toshed them over with a drop of spare antifoul. Come up good as new.
What the point of going sailing if everybody can afford it? The worlds going to hell in a handcart!

On the other hand, doing it yourself sounds like a good scheme. Won't catch on though, most of us are too lazy if truth be told. (Makes note to inflate jackets this weekend)

Cheers

Jim

We have the automatic inflation version. Several of them are nearing their use by dates and I keep saying I am going to jump in the sea with one on to test it. I will make sure someone has a camera to hand when I do it.

Just broach and fill the cockpit with water while you're wearing it. Goes off like a nartillery shell. Completes the picture of utter marine incompetence with a yellow rubber dinghy round your neck. Guess how I know this.
