Here's one for all the delivery skippers. What would you allow as a reasonable delivery time from turkey "marmaris" back to Falmouth uk. On a reasonably quick monohull 33' yacht.

Seen a boat, as you do, and weighing up the pros and cons

cheers

I hate to offer a pessimistic answer, but I had a mate bring back his 41ft yacht from marmaris and he ended up doing it in stages over 2 years due to weather, up the Portuguese Coast in particular was a challenge during the summer months. I don't think it is as simple as dividing nautical miles by average speed due to possible delays due to weather so I would just say that be prepared for a flexible time scale unles you either go north from S France via canal or road.

Sound advice. The conventional wisdom is to sail North along the Portugeses Atlantic Coast in early spring before the NW winds set in. The alternative is to go via the Azores or be prepared to sit in Harbour until the winds are suitable, which over the summer could be a long time.

Did Corfu back to UK a few years ago. Original plan was 28 days, however for various reasons stopped in Spain and trucked home. But if had not had problems the original schedule was feasible.

Even starting in early May the weather was poor chugging westwards, but you need to start going north up the Portuguese coast by the beginning of June otherwise it is a really hard slog against the prevailing winds.

As suggested best to do it in two legs, first year to Spain or the Algarve and second year up the Atlantic coast. Alternativly if draft allows can be done more comfortably using Canal du Midi.

Usually not worth buying a boat in Turkey for use in the UK to save money. Might make sense if you are treating the return trip as a holiday. Don't forget many boats in Turkey are not VAT paid, even if they are owned by EU residents.

Thinking of an adventure. Buy boat. bring it back, just wondered how long to do it in one hit. Sounds like one season to southern Spain winter there next season make way early spring. or just haul it overland from med to Brittany.

That is a better approach. You will find road transport from Marseilles to La Rochelle easy to get as their is traffic bringing new boats from the factories for commissioning in the Med and looking for return loads. Coming from Turkey make sure your paperwork is in good order, particularly VAT evidence otherwise you could get a nasty shock if you get caught in the countries such as Italy which might be more rigorous than others. The road transport will need it as well.

The Portuguese coast heading north can be done in summer if you leave ports early morning and are happy to motor sail much of the time, we did it last year but, it was a summer cruise rather than delivery trip. If in a hurry, as others say, lay off to the west to catch the south westerlies.

lt all depends on the time of year and nature of the passage. If I was doing this as a delivery, ie pushing on and at sea as long as possible. I would allow a month or so, as a series cruises then as long as you like.

Another option is to sail it up the Adriatic to Slovenia. then truck it to a channel port. Stay out of Italy as far as trucking's concerned. It's a long trip sailing round Iberia. two seasons more like it. But pres you don't have the time yourself!?
