Re: Weather predictions for next 2 weeks

Can someone please give me the best web site for weather predictions for say next 3 days then 1 week, then 2 weeks. I pose the question this way as different sites may be best for the different periods. Intend to head for Brittany with Guernsey first stop Saturday (or more likely Sunday).

Second question how do I print the results? I tried yesterday from a couple of web sites and only the top left hand corner of the synoptic chart printed. Sorry to be thick!

Re: Weather predictions for next 2 weeks

IIRC, forecasters generally say they're better than 80% right up to three days ahead, somewhat less at five days, then it goes downhill from there, so anything over a month in normal conditions is only a little better than you'd do with statistics.

Different forecasters use different models to predict what is essentially a chaotic system. In some circumstances one will do better than another, with a different set of initial conditions another model will be better, but whichever model is used, accuracy deteriorates rapidly as you look futher ahead.

Moral? Don't forget your bit of seaweed /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think you'd be hard pressed to better the free and the unfree services from :

<http://www.weatherweb.net/>

Explore the site....

I've been sailing >35 years, with pro training in met interpretation, and I haven't found better than Simon Keeling's company. That's why - when I really need a professional forecast, or want to explore the 'options', I'm willing to pay them for what they do. <font color="blue"> </font>

Re: Weather predictions for next 2 weeks

IMHO the best 3 day prediction is Theyr at http://theyr.net/cg/cny/I1a91bf/F=js*v*040701*7*EN*engl_London . The wind is good but don't ever believe the rain predictions, they are far too pessimistic. The Met Office are also rather good as well, as is the BBC.
The best long range wind site I've found (7 days) is http://www.xcweather.co.uk. Although I've find their inshore wind strengths for the south coast consistently underpredicted, you are closer to the truth if you look at the Channel LV. The sailing forecast on http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/ is quite good, although the grid is quite coarse, so don't assume the lightest wind strengths wil always apply.

For more than 7 days I've tried several sites (Online weather, Weatheronline, Accuweather) but the danger is that you end up only believing the forecast you want, when in reality nobody knows any more detail than "The high might break down and it will become unsettled" at that sort of range. Your best bet is to look at the synoptic charts from the met office, e.g. at NOAA and work it out for yourself.

I've not had problems printing, is your aplication set to "shrink to fit" or the equivalent? If its published as an A3 and you print ot A4, you'll only get 1/4 of a chart.

Re: Weather predictions for next 2 weeks

Thanks but how do you print xcweather. If i put the curser over the arrow it gives me future wind for that position but print only give the map of UK no wind data on RH side

Re: Weather predictions for next 2 weeks

If you want a general sense - that is: will be it blowy or not - of what the weather might be like up to 9 days ahead. I've found this German site reasonably reliable.

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/

Click on the 9-day icon, middle right of the page.

Re: Weather predictions for next 2 weeks

Not sure exactly why, but the wind data is an actively written grid of some sort. If you set up "screen capture" in Paintshop Pro (or other drawing package) then you can capture the image you want and print it out.

If you set up the page (File:Page Setup in your browser) for landscape printing then hover your cursor to select your area and use Ctrl P to print it should work OK.
