Hello

I have no idea about cost but it would be really helpful to gain a ballpark figure for replacing the cushions, upholstery and curtains on a Freeman 23 if anyone has any sort of idea/guess?

Also it would be great to have any recommendations for firms which are in the area close to the Thames?

Many thanks

Nick

My wife does a lot of curtain/upholstery work but not near enough to you to make it cost effective. Anyway, I asked for a ball park estimate to give you some idea and, without knowing size/quantity of the cushions she was unable to help, however, what she did say was that the material cost would be the larger element. £5 a meter buys stuff so cheap that its not worth the cost of making them up and its possible to go up to £50 a meter for really good quality upholstery fabric ! As a fairly useless guide she fully recovered all the seating in our Renaissance 31 (curved and buttoned seat backs and other fancy stuff) and estimates the labour alone would have been around £800 to £1000.

If I wasn't married to her I think I would have followed the advice above and bought a sewing machine. Problems are pattern match, buttoning, zips etc. Meat and drink to her but would baffle me and if you have bought the expensive material mistakes could be expensive.

BTW once you have figured how much material you need ebay might come up with something - But do try to get a sample as colours look different on the screen.

I used Herberts in Aldershot High Street. They are a general upholsterers so do not charge "marine" prices but they do boat work (a local boat sales establishment also uses them). Good pricing and pleased with their work.

Probably the worlds scruffiest and most unlikely shop and proprietor, but comes recommended from me. Single seat was £100 against a couple of Solent area marine specialists who quoted around £300

With blue upholstery foam (which will last longer and give more support than cheapo white foam), self piped upholstery and lined curtains I reckon £1500-2000. If you have the existing cushions and curtains as templates that will save time and money and you can send them to a maker if needed. If you Don't want lining on the curtains then use a white or natural fabric which will also save on sewing cost.
I would use a domestic or car upholsterer/curtain maker which will save costs.
Buy the fabrics from a fabric warehouse yourself ( I use Just Fabrics in Burford). An upholsterer and curtain maker will tell you how much to buy and you won't pay their mark up

I used the blue seat foam throughout, which was a mistake as it's too hard for the v berth though just the job elsewhere. In the bedroom, you'd be better off with a sandwich of the softer stuff glued on top (or memory foam)
