Back in the 70's and 80's there were a number of good books giving baits, tactics, tackle etc. Few specialised only in boat fishing, but gave good general advise.
Have you tried on Amazon.com?
The very best way to learn is to join a local club and either go out with a couple of the club members or join a charter trip with them.
Where do you fish? All year round? Do you have some gear already?
If I can help with tips and advise I am happy to do so. I sell boats for a living and happen to be a fantical boat angler with a lot of my customers asking for tips etc.

Now advise is something I could do with. First sea fishing season to date has netted:
1 small Plaice
1 small Bream
2 Garfish (1 fouil hucked)
about 15 Mackeral.

Wife is now getting very bored!

Where are you based. I'm at Chichester.

I am based in Poole and have a boat on the Hamble and one in Weymouth.
From Chichester you have some excellent fishing.
May through to July you have some of the best Bream fishing in the country just out on Boulder Bank or West towards the Nab on a mark called bullocks patch. when the Bream are in you can't miss the spot as there will be dozens of boats there.
Fish a very light rod with 12lb line. The cheats, but easy method is to use mini mackeral feathers with each one baited with a little bit of ragworm or a baby squid. Drop to the bottom, if you don't get a bite in a minute or two, bounce the lead back a bit further in the tide and so on. Use just enough lead to get to the bottom. A fish over 3lb is good and a fish over 4lb is a clonker.
The same time of year is prime Smoothound fishing. The same general area will produce fish, again follow the other boats with the banks off Selsey and the deep channels south of the Nab being tops. Use a 3 or 4 foot flowing trace of 30lb line and any crab bait you can find the best being hermit crab.
Fish with 12lb class gear for stacks of fun as these fish can fight hard with the males reaching 8lb and the females occassionally going well over 20lb.
June through to August is Tope time. Step up your Smoothound gear to 20lb class a 4 foot flowing trace of heavy 200lb mono (NOT WIRE) and a strong bronzed 8/0 hook. Hook a mackerel with the backbone cut out (a flapper) through the bottom jaw and out through the top. Fish the same marks as the Smoothounds. Male Tope won't break 35lb, but go nuts with females regularly going 50lb plus with a 70lb being a whopper.
Please put all Smoothound and Tope back.
Cod & Whiting start showing in late September with October to early December being best. Use your tope gear for Cod, but a much lighter trace line (say 50lb). Use whole calamari squid as bait and as many as you can pile on without burying the hook point. The Smoothound marks will work well for Cod and whiting, but look at a chart and fish anywhere that you can see an obvious drop off or rough ground.
