Errrr...... Jack and Chris Peate at the Gibralter Sailing Centre. I went years and years ago, in February. Had great fun, ended up in Tangiers, etc etc.

Good luck.

All Abroad not a good choice (IMHO).

Earlier this (no, last) year, I was tied up in Marina Smir (Morocco), an aforementioned school boat came in and confirmed rumours I had heard - the boats are so new that only (ok, it might be mostly) the *instructor* brings the boat alongside!!!!

... this was contrasted a couple of hours later by the Gib Sailing school boat coming in, each student on board did mutiple approaches to different berths (in the almost empty marina) to practice berthing with the wind from different directions.

I did my DS 7/8 years ago with Jack Peate, and was happy (they are still using the same boats now, but that shouldn't put you off).

The other choice in Gib is Straits Sailing, AFAIK also a good choice, with knowledgeable people (they wrote the eponymous local pilot book).

Gib is certainly a good place to train - pretty much always got wind. There are good places to go no matter which way it blows, and Ceuta and Smir are fun places across the Straits (having been to Tangier, I wouldn't go there again...)

... and it is tidal (important)

tidal gibraltar

um, yes it's tidal - tho only in the eyes of the RYA, training wise? I mean, in reality, you can chuck the tide tables overboard, no?

I did power YM in the area. Good fun with the med skippers along too, eg..
instructor: "ok, there's bad weather coming in, what actions do you take"
med power skipper type "I'd tell the girls to come in from the foredeck and put away the drinks glasses."

Oh, and qualification-wise, i saw an advert from a gib-based sailing school that *insisted* that YM candidates had done the shorebased theory first. Altho not actually a requirement by the RYA, I reckon that this is a good sign. No idea of the sailing schools there tho.

oh, one other thing, i bet you can ask any school for a nice 10% discount, cos they all offer intro commissions each way for referrals from powerboatie schools and v-v.

Finally, go to/from Malaga, praps cos gib flights cost a bomb. Car rental in Nov thru the internet was v efficient, about 100 euros for a week, cheaper than a cab. BUT ask the schol if ok to go to gibraltar with it. Bout an hour on the motorway.

Re: tidal gibraltar

Well ok, there is not much in terms of rise & fall (nor are there shallows to speak of), but you *cant* ignore the current, nor the tidal set. Basically, with wind and tide in the wrong direction through the Straits, anywhere near springs (in a saily boat) you better decide you want to go the other way...

...Re Gib flights, BA are costly (esp. one way!), but the flights are oerated by GB Air, and you can book them direct by calling the ticket desk at Gib.... at a substantial saving....

.... better still, go Monarch Scheduled from Luton - full service - meals and wine - last time I went it cost £71 return, all up... (Sleazyjet eat your heart out...)
