Hi all,

Anybody any idea of the best stuff to use to re-proof my spray hood? I would prefer something easy in an aerosol can?

Best, Charlie.

Thanks Sax!

Does Nik Wax last a season, and will it go white, with age? I saw somebodies spray hood back along and it had gone sort of streaky white, he said it was the stuff he had sprayed on it, but couldn't remember what it was??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Fabsil is the stuff available from camping shops or your local rip off boaty shop. used it over the last few seaons. no change in colour. it's in a tin so you can either paint it on. or go down your garden centre and buy one of the small sprayers for house plants and use that. but dont do it on a windy day if your outside and spray.

works very well, last a few seasons. Oh... it's a clear liquid dries in a few hours

I've done my Gill oilies with it with no problems. If the outer is polycotton based there is a different Nik Wax. I've also used it for tents. Nothing has ever gone white that I've done. It is a waterbased product and I think it disappears eventually.

Many thanks to all for your replies, I will see what I can find locally. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, you are correct- from what I remember the NikWak spray proofer is hydroscopic and so it penetrates the sprayhood, dodger etc especially well if the material is already wet- it is then drawn in more deeply into the fibres and is thus more effective

Fabsil is the stuff that has worked well for us, but don't be tempted to buy a little tin, your hood will just suck the stuff in. It is not cheap, but it works and doesn't streak or leave nasty marks don't know how it compares with Nikwax on the cost front

OK, I will see if I can find some Fabsil /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS. just had a qwick squint through your Blog, I think if it had been me I would have just kept right on going......bu99er the UK! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nikwax is great if you can wash it in. But if you can't actually wash your spray hood in a machine, fabsil is the way to go. You can get it in spray cans which are very easy to apply. We redid our cockpit cover last year and it did all last winter, and is currently standing up to torrential autumn rains in Andalucia.

On the other hand,we redo our oilies with Nikwax every year or so. This is quite a job as you need to use 'techwash' first so it is applied to clean fabric. But it works a treat, including on various Paramo fleeces, walking coats etc. As liveaboards with no washing machine, it's almost worth hiring a flat with a machine for a week just to do this job!

Fabsil was about half the price of Nikwax in my local camping shop. I have used nikwax for oilies, but I don't really care whether the spray hood is breathable, so I bought Fabsil.
