It's time to start planning my winter maintenance. One job I didn't get to last year was painting my engine.

Any major tips in getting it clean enough to paint, in-situ?

I was planning on a hot degrease, wash with hot water, then a wipe with acetone.
Will use a similar green to original (looks like RAL 6000 to me) in an alkyd paint, 2 coats, possibly sprayed, but maybe brushed.

Once you have got the worst of the oil and dirt off, use brake and clutch cleaner spray - its fairly cheep and does the job - Do make sure you have lots ventilation !

Just some paint suggestions..

The genuine VP spray paint really is superb. It dries in a flash, covers really well and sticks to anything. It allows you to be less than fastidious in your preparation and still get a top result. Part no. 1141566

An alternative is TK Colorspray 40085. I have an aerosol unused on the engine as yet because the VP one just goes on and on, but it looks good in a small test I did.

A third possibilty (which I'm just about to order in Beta red) is Tractol machinery enamel from Smith & Allan. They will supply any RAL no. (I agree, 6000 is the one) in either liquid or 400ml aerosol form.

Personally I think that aerosols are the way to go. A previous owner did some hand painting on my engine and it looks very naff.
