Re-Painting Fibreglass Dash

Hi I want to re-paint the fibreglass dash on my 1992 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 but not sure what the best way to do this. Would like to go with a Matt black.



Any Reccomendations Please

Axon are always my 'go to' recommendation for dashboards. Barry is a top bloke, quality is great and prices very reasonable.

Wouldn't you be better off waiting until you've figured out what you're doing about engines (and associated instrumentation and controls) before you start work on the dash?

I don't want it wrapped I was after paint recommendations. The Fibreglass part of the dash is mottled so would be awful to wrap.

So what paint spay or roller

The dash is made up of three parts the instrument and switch sections are Detachable Panels which I shall use ABS Carbon Sheet and cut holes as nessacary. The vinyl above and below the dial panels. And the main expanse of Fibreglass which surrounds the whole lot and stretches right down to the windscreen. Which is the bit I want to paint. I am going with outboards and the only decision remaining is one vs two. But either way the decision will only affect how many holes are cut in the ABS Carbon sheets. And the Levers required so can do the dash up without major changes once the outboard/s are installed

I think people generally use automotive paint. I guess there's a matt finish lacquer that could be used?

Car aerosol for a professional looking finish. Hundreds of shades including matt black.

You can get vinyl dye spray for the flexible vinyl covered sections.

Those textured dashes comes up well if you use some polish and wax. A friend restored a speedboat and he was about to paint the faded dash but it came up really well with a good clean, a light polish and a coat of wax.

Paint may be prone to scratches & knocks.

Halfords sell paint for plastics, worked well for me on a plastic light fitting in my boat. Maybe worth a look.

There's paints that are up to the task and a darker colour might help glare and vision.

Has the area been previously painted or is it still original gelcoat?

I restored that area on a 270, It was very oxidised and faded, combination of surface correction and colour matched gel coat. Lots of faff but worth it.

Wrapping is not a bad shout, the problems wth paint and prep are vast, not as bad as gelcoat but still heavy.
