Ok folks ive just read the procedure for re-naming your boat and i have to say......what on earth is that all about.
So who has re-named their boat without doing this and have you payed the price of disregarding the Ledger of the Deep.?
The reason i ask is because i would like to change the name of my boat but i cannot bring myself to pour half a bottle of champers in the drink:D.

I'm with you on this. I'm tempted just to order up a name, tell the marina and change OFCOM/CG66 and to hell with all the nonsense.

The wife on the other hand, says that's unlucky..............sigh.

The bubbly you chuck in the marina is cheap stuff - get a bottle or two of the good stuff for yourself and guests.

We were going to do it for our second boat, but didn't keep it long enough in the end. It is, of course, a lot of superstitious nonsense, but it's also a good excuse for a party with a few good friends - or you could invite everyone in the marina!

A slug of rum goes overboard at least every season and before and after ocean passages. People have been appeasing gods for many more years than they have been choosing popes!

No problem with name changes, I've done it five times and haven't had a thunderbolt yet! (fingers crossed) So the rum libation works.

I'm a staunch atheist and non beliver in mumbo-jumbo, but somehow it just seems right that Neptune should help in the celebration of a new boat name (which normally co-incides with a change in ownership) - a glass of bubbly over the bow isn't a big price to pay!

does it count if the alcohol has passed through you body first? Planning to re-name my boat aswell

Sorry, no - you will have used up the essential power of the alcohol! There really is no alternative to wrapping up in a sheet, making a fake trident with a broom and cardboard, putting on a fake beard and sloshing some booze around in the company of a few good friends!

I've renamed countless boats. I get a phone call, go along peel the old name off and stick a new one on. I'm still here!

I did attend a "Blessing of the Boats" service once, Vicar was all fire and brimstone. I had to suppress a snigger. Friend turned and asked "why the smile" I said "its physics that keeps boats afloat not God" OK if your into all that stuff. Me? I'm still to be convinced.

I'm with you on this absolutely Neil but the whole re-naming process was more than just the bubbly as far as the web page i looked was concerned?.
They suggested i speak about three verses to gods about god knows what lol.
If i can follow Barry and Michaels route i'd quite happily whip those stickers off today.....

I changed the name of my first boat 3 years ago without any of the associated nonsense, sold it a year later for £5.5k more than I paid for it...:D

Bejasus!

A kettle of hot water, a scraper, a set of new lettering and perhaps an e mail or two to reassign the name on the SSR and EPIRB. A bit more paperwork/wonga involved if you're Part 1 but no big deal.

Or, of course, have all the fun you like with tridents, rum and beards. Just ensure you keep priests off the boat though, they're unlucky.

The hard part is finding a decent name...
;)

A coin under the mast....
ASK the boat if it's ok to change the name and get it's approval for the new name...
Crack a bottle and
PARTY! C'MON!!

Have you all no soul......? Does your boat deserve no less?

It's a load of cobblers. If you actually believe there is a spirit under the waves perhaps you should just sell the boat. Much safer.

I regard Christmas as a load of old cobblers, but it does not stop me eating and drinking too much in the company of friends and family. Equally, Easter is the same, but I'm not going to go to work. A renaming ceremony can be a chance to break the ice with lots of marina neighbours that you would not otherwise meet.

Yup.... boat launch day there's always a bottle of good ale opened; one good splash for the boat, one good splash for Neptune, and the rest for me & the helping hand(s)....

When I first launched current boat in Burnham on Crouch the RN Sailing Association Padre who lives locally just happened to be present. On the ground that he had blessed one of Pete Goss's boats that went on to have a bit of a problem he promised not to say a word!
