re-naming & sail No ??

Does anyone know if it is bad luck to rename a boat, or if ther are any miths about re naming?
Should I go to sea and say a few words to the sea gods etc (hope not)

is there a legal side to re naming?

why do people have sail numbers?

as a new owner do I have to get a sail number?

I would guess over80% of MN ships get re-named during their lifetime and looking around it must be over 50% of small craft as well. Up to you how you celibrate this, I was serving on a Turkish ship that was renamed and the procedure was to kill a goat down each anchor hawser pipe and drape the national flag down the bridge front but I am not suggesting you need to follow this in UK
If you are registered class 1 you have to get approval for any new name, if you have a SSR number you can do what you like
Sail numbers are for racers but I believe the number stays the same unless the country designation changes ie mine was K44T and if I went racing now I would have to change to GBR44T. This is why you see old sails with K and the newer ones GBR

No you do not have a sail number at all, numbers are allocated by local yacht clubs to boats to be raced so they can identify them (crossing the finish line in first place with some luck).

Good luck with the renaming, just steer clear of names that may be confusing to others; we have one here called MARGAY, no problem till you say it 3 times when calling up, it can sound like MAYDAY.... Then there are the 2 cats, Lotsanookie and Lacanookie.

Renaming a boat is often viewed as bad luck, however I feel that if you're ridding the poor boat of a name that it'd be ashamed to go out with - it's likely to be most grateful. I'd not worry about the luck thing too much, but work on the basis that a boat will tend to look after someone that looks after it...

As for sail numbers, you probably do have one which is associated with the class - usually meaning yours is the n'th of that class to be built. This cannot be changed because you can't change when the boat was built. There is I believe a separate issue with racing sail numbers which are issued by who knows who (possibly sailing clubs as mentioned by others). If you haven't got a number at all, e.g. if you've built the boat, you can get a sail number throught the RYA. The above is my understanding anyway..

One apsect of renaming a boat that I came across is that any paper documentation that you inherit and which you will want to pass on when you sell the boat, suddenly all has the wrong name on.

Now I know that some piece of paper with a boat name on is not really solid evidence of anything at all (as boat names can be changed at will) I still feel it is more convincing if the name on a piece of paper matches what is painted on the side of the hull.

Just in the process of doing the same thing, RYA tech department are V helpful. My boat has a sail number already and they let me change the name and owner name over the phone. If your boat is on the SSR then write to them at

I renamed my boat about four months after I bought her about a year ago. There were lots of incidents that happened subsequently, which could be considered bad luck. For example the diesel tank leaked fuel into the bilges and during a cross-channel trip it got everywhere! The smell was definitely not nice. On the other hand, the repeatedly over-heating engine was cured quite cheaply and served me well on two windless channel crossings. Then again, I found an underwater skin-fitting loose because the backing pad had disintegrated, but it seemingly hadn't leaked, even on a rough cross-channel trip. I think it is just chance, you can always find something that can be put down as a cause of bad luck/ good luck. Just change the name and and enjoy your sailing. Good and bad things will happen if you do or if you don't, anyway!

So, on the same theme .... my yacht is not SSR registered (as far as I know) but does have GBRxxxx on the sails. How would it have been registered / allocated this number and what does it mean to me, if anything?

what does an SSR number count towards, we have a macgregor 26, brought over from U.S 18months ago, we bought her second hand 2 weeks ago, unregistered in any british agency, is there anything that we NEED to get registered with? we're obviously going to join the RYA soon(mixed views between friends of the worth of that), my old man is a member of the Royal Naval Sailing Association so far so we are registered with them.
