If God's name was invoked in the naming and lauching, surely it should also at a renaming - 'May God bless her and all who sail in her' you bunch of heathens - or should I have said pagans?
Does that mean you don't call your boat "she" or ascribe various god/evil attributes to wind and water ? As a humanist, I find it very difficult not to believe in some form of metaphysical entities in almost anything connected with the sea (and especially the Lakes)
vide a recent reference of yours to the proximity of the Windermere webcam to some ghostly location .
How would you celebrate the launch of a new boat ?

I was referring to the spirit tales of the area. I don't believe in ghosts.
I certainly feel different ways about different places and situations but that is my reaction to them and not any intrinsic values they have.
I don't refer to Slippy as a "she". It doesn't seem right somehow, to me.
I don't have any kind of ceremony for launching. The rebuilt Heron was just floated off the trailer without any special celebration.
I suppose that makes me a bit unemotional sounding, but I'm not, I just think that our relationship with the world and everything within it comes from within ourselves.
I haven't had any experiences that lead me to think otherwise. Perhaps I may at some time.
Everyone to their own. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As an atheist I would take offence at the mention of a deity in any naming ceremony of my boat.

Without deities what is the point of the ceremony? Libations for Aeolus and Neptune (and the attendees) are the dues for your celestial insurance policy.
Could it be that you are always looking at the world and "framing" it (if that's the correct expression ?)
In your mind do you separate smell, touch sound and taste from the (essentially) 2 dimensional existence of your pictures of a 3D world ?
Sorry, it's a bit philosophical, rather like the English Empiricists who said that the world could only exist if it was being perceived in some way.
Brilliant and evocative your photos are, yet memories and emotions are also strirred by e.g. Land Rover engine smells, Fray Bentos pies, curry, wine, heat / cold, which so bestir forumites.
I can't imagine a world without its living components each having some form of spiritual entity. errr, I am wavering between Buddhism and being an animist, now /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ah well back to lurking for me then, still I meant every word I slowly typed.
Merry Near Winter ( Solstice ) Festival (Ceremony, Celebration, whatever ) and a Happy and Healthy New Year
As an atheist I am rather surprised you even bothered to make a contribution to the thread as I am sure very few are not interested in what you do and do not take offence to!! In anycase I was referring to "renaming" Happy Christmas or as you prefer would winterval
