I once asked a French friend what he meant by "faire le pipe" - I wasn't familiar with the phrase, honest, guv.

His response was that a literal translation was "make the pipe" but that, in this particular case, the pipe was made of a revolutionary organic compound that was normally soft and malleable but which hardened when it came into contact with human saliva. I was just about to say that it sounded like a load of old rubbish, when the penny dropped..............
