I've been gathering information on Iridium also for our Worldtrip starting next year. I was told by a Dutch and American reseller that the current low price is only temporary because the Motorola's involved are "leftovers" from the bankruptcy of the original Iridium. This is the Motorola 9500 (the big one).
When this phones are sold, you van only buy the (new) motorola type 9505; a little smaller, no more functionallity, but costs twice as much.
Please note that the prices in the USA are much better (compared to the dutch prices), especially for accessoires like the datakit.
