re-galvanising an anchor

I have a chance to have my 45lb CQR anchor re-galvanised but they want me to separate the fluke from the shank. Any tips please on how to do it? Thanks in anticipation.

Some gift horses are not as they seem.

It is so cheap to get an CQR regalvanized by an experienced group, I would not bother with an offer from someone that does not know what they are doing. There are issues with CQRs but destroying them is not a solution.

Presumably "they" (that want you to seperate the two parts) are those who will do the galvanizing.
Have they not re-galvanized anchors before? The two parts are typically loose enough to galvanize without seperation. I'm a galvanizer. We do many anchors a year without seperating any of them.
Its tru that tightly fitting moving parts will freeze together with zinc, but I've never seen this with an anchor. Gate hinges, drop bolts, gate latches etc are all made suitably slack for galvanizing, and successfully. So it is with anchors.

I'm pretty sure the two are hot forged together. Separating them ain't an option.

Are CQRs the ones with lead at the pointy end which all melts out when you have 'em redipped?

Genuine CQRs don't contain lead but many of the copies do.

A nautical myth! It's steel.

They galvanise perfectly well without being separated - but I'd either pickle or blast it before galvanising.

Aplogies for hi-jacking the thread but can anyone recommend a firm, that they have used, who would re-galvanise a genuine CQR. Preferably located in South London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent or Hants.
