We arrived in villiFrance a few days ago and notice a great deal of France boats flying the polish flag ,

Please excuse my ignorance but where is the advantage in a UK flagged vessel re-flagging to Portuguese, or for that matter any other non-UK flag?

SSR is easy to get and re-new and UK vessels are some of the least regulated in the EU.

Well, with the news that Scotland hopes to be covid free by autumn I am seriously considering putting my red ensign away and substituting a Saltire when visiting West Coast and Norn Irn. harbours this summer.
Hopefully this will offset the name 'Corona' and the port 'Strangford' still inscribed on the transom.

Your right SSR is easy to get if you live in the U.K. And once it was easy for any one where ever they lived , but for them who live else where and don't have and address and bank account in the U.K. Who SSR registered run out they won't be able to renew , many French as well as other European had red ensign and reg under the SSR ,
Plus add the UK leaving the end of the year European may find it more convenient to keep it flag within the EU .
Being Holland, Belgium and other have cracked down , polland seen to be the way many are going ,

Many charter boats are owned by UK based "offshore" companies because their offshore earnings are not taxable in the UK unless the income is repatriated to the UK. SSR is usually only available to UK residents.

t one time all you needed was an address in the U.K. Now it's been tighten up so anyone who managed to get one four or five years ago and wasn't a U.K. Resident now it about to expired isn't going to be able to renew .
Plus others who been flaged under the red duster like many European where don't want any hassle after the end of this year or question asked .

That's normally Monaco, Liberia, or somewhere even more dodgy, like the Channel Islands.
