My cabin sole is the standard wood with white insert that is widely fitted in the industry, but new to me. The finish is dull but grips well to the shoe. I am in the middle of a major refit, and wondered what I ought to do to this flooring. I do not even know what it has been finished with - oil or varnish.

So some advice please.

It's probably teak veneer with holly stripes.

To remove the old finish if it is varnish then use a stripper like Notromors and scrape it off. Gently on the sanding.

I use Ronseal Diamond Hard floor varnish in clear satin. Easy to use and lasts several years. Easy to go over without a complete strip. Not slippy

I have used Ronseal Diamond hard, not the finish of a good varnish but hard wearing, fairly good non slip. it does end up with some brush marks but not that obvious.
it is a water based product for household timber floors, dries quickly ( hence brush marks) easy to over coat nxt time

It is actually wood, I take it? Mine turned out to be teak-and-holly-effect plastic laminate over plywood. I only mention it because the "dull but grippy" finish sounded familiar.

If it is wood, I find that wiping it over with a tiny amount of teak oil, allowing it to soak for a couple of hours, then rubbing off all excess oil with kitchen paper, leaves a good practical finish which is easily maintained. I certainly wouldn't varnish it.

If the sole is looking a bit jaded, I add a very small amount of dark "scratch cover" to the teak oil before applying. This helps to restore the teak colour.

Robbins Timber do a laminate sheet which is really durable and looks good. Also if not recoverable, I have used TEK DEK with excellent results on my lil' boat......
