Re-engine project

My 1972 Hurley 24/70 needs a new engine. It has a Petter AB1W of 5.5HP. Anyone recommend suitable replacements which would be easiest to install? I have been offered reconditioned Volvo MD7A, Arona (16HP?) or Nanni (7HP?) units. Would any of these be suitable?

Having replaced an old Bukh 10 with a new Bukh 10, can I just mention a couple of things?

Try to make sure that whatever new engine you choose will (if possible):
Fit in the space.
Sit on the same engine bearers
Has throttle and gearbox control cable atttachments in more or less the same place
Has fuel in, water in and exhaust out in more or less the same place
Has important service points readily accessible when installed.
Uses the same prop, shaft and thrust bearing (if any).

If things like this need to be re-engineered then the cost of fitting the new donkey can rival or exceed the cost of the engine itself. That's why I choose the new model of the old engine. Even then it needed new engine mount points, new control cables and the shaft had to be shortened.

Hi

I have an MD7A. Its about 23 years old and still running well although I have some corrosion problems in the raw water cooling system. Its 13hp and pushes my 2.4 ton motorsailor (25') along at a respectable 6.5 knots full, cruising at about 5.5 knots without too much stress. Spare parts are relatively easy to come by although expensive.

The advice about fitting into an existing environment is good. The expense of all the adjustments can add considerably to the initial cost.

Regards
TonyM
