Volvo MD2B in my mate's boat has finally given up the ghost. Looking for a replacement, preferably freshwater cooled, and obvously as easy a transplant as possible! Anybody out there done this already? Considering Sole, Thornycroft, Beta and Vetus at present....

Seriously look at Beta. Great engine and in the (unlikely)event of requiring spares most can be got cheaply from a Kubota tractor agent.

They will know the bearer measurements of your mate's Volvo and will probably be able to match them.

Great people to deal with, most helpful and usually a good discount at the Boat Show.

Just finishing off replacing an MD7A with a Beta 13.5HP. The feet on the engine are the same width as the Volvo but need to be lifted about 30mm. The engine is a lot shorter than the Volvo so needed a longer propshaft. Generally a very easy replacement. Hope the engine performs as well as all the reports I've heard.
I'll be posting a description of the job on the website in the next few weeks.
Good luck...

Did a VP MD2B to Yanmar 3GM30F a couple of years ago without major enging bed fabrication, very pleased with result. Don't know if the replacement Yanmar range can be persuaded to do the same trick though, would need to examine engine diagrams. PM if you are interested.

Regards, Jeff.

Just changed an MD2B for a 28Hp Beta BD1005, very pleased and would have no hesitation in recomending. Beta is smaller, lighter, smoother, more economical and everything is far easier to get to.
