Re-bedding Centaur window

Next weekends task is to re-bed the windows on my Centaur (interscrews to be replaced). Never had one apart yet.

A small job to kick off the refit. Any tips?

Unfortunately I can't give any advice apart from it might be worth dropping a post on the westerly owners forum. There must be someone who has had this type of window apart on there.
 
Did one on my Centaur last winter. Many of the interscrews sheered as I took them out. Be careful & try to save as many as you can. They are not cheap. Once I got the screws out, the window came out fairly easily. The inside faces of the ali frames had some areas of corrosion so I cleaned them up & painted the corroded areas with Duralac.

Re-fitting takes two people: one eithers side of the screw. I used Arbomast to seal the window in. This is a mastic that never sets. I couldn't get white but grey was fine since it matched in with the frames. Excess can very easily be cleaned off with white sprit. A tip from a friend of mine who used to work for Westerly was to put a drill shank through the hole before inserting the interscrew. This cleans out any mastic. If you get mastic in the screw, you can't tighten it.
 
Helped a friend do them on Berwick a few years ago.

The units were OK so did not attempt to renew the seals in them (but the frame is in two halves if necessary to dismantle.)

All we needed to do was remove, clean up and refit the units with some, but not all, new interscrews.

Interscrews are an odd size (M3.5 ??) Could only get them from Trafalagar Yacht Services. Horrendously expensive too.


Dunno where you would get seals to refurb the units or how easy/difficult it would be. Eagle Boat Windows, Hadlow Marine, or Seaclear Windows maybe. Might even be a pro job to refurb.

I have done mine, still chasing small leaks after three winters, I would ditch the interscrews and nut and bolt instead, consider using a rubber gasket between the windows and hull, but then not sure if I am the best person to give advice as my windows leak:)

C&J International Windows were the cheapest for interscrews.

Trafalgar had seal for our Duo windows.

Trafalgar has Arbo Kol 1000 white sealant for windows.

Did the front windows of our Duo over the winter, and got my bits and pieces from the above.
 
+1 for plain screws and nylock nuts. Just not worth the hassle and expense of fragile (usually plated brass) interscrews. Don't tighten them all the way right from the start as most of the sealant would then be squeezed out.

Excellent advice, just be very gentle as both the glass and frames mark very easily. I have done mine twice because the first time I replaced the small joining brackets with homemade ones of aluminium with stainless screws. Within half a season electrolytic action started and clear fluid leaking from rubber seal. This winter bought replacement brackets from Trafalgar yachts with screws supplied half way through no problems yet. No leaks either. The original interscrews had a bleed hole in them the new ones havent.

I replaced the windows on Como in 2003, I got the new windows from Hadlow Marine who also supplied a grey bedding tape instead of the normal mastic, this worked perfectly with no leaks at all since. They also supplied new interscrews (2BA x 9.5mm nickel plated brass) at a cost at the time of £2.00 for 10 and the corresponding 2BA machine screws to go in them. I found them to be very friendly and knowledgable. No connection just a satisfied customer.
 
I also used grey Scapa tape from Hadlow marine for bedding new windows on my Hurley 22, Its easy to use and so far no leaks.
The guy was very helpful and gave good advice.
