Re: Battery system

Re: Battery system

My recent experience has taught me NOT to scrimp on the cost of any switching or selecting device in this circuit. My 1/2/both/off switch failed followed very quickly by the battery isolators. I now have 2 very high quaslity isolators only and have done away completely weith the 1/2/both/off in favour of doing the same thing using the isolators, not forgetting that at least one should always be on with the engine running. IMHO far less to go wrong. Good luck.

Re: Battery system

re using the battery isolaters, put the cable from the alternator and the cable to the leisure batteries ont the same post. put the cable from the start battery on the other post.
when starting the engine it will always charge leisure batts first
after 1/2 hr or so enable isolater that will then charge the start battery
when moored up unenable switch and start battery is isolated, one other advantage is that providing you use heavy enough cables,if your start battery is a bit low you can link leisure batts to it through isolater and effectively jumpstart the start battery,
make sure you use heavy duty cables though for all your battery connections

Re: Battery system

Hello Oriziba I would suggest that perhaps one minute or less will be enough for the charge current to the engine start battery to diminish leaving lots of charge capacity for the service battery. This especially for us sailors who really want to stop that engine ASAP.

Orizaba is that named after a ship of many years ago? It came to grief I think about 100 years ago off Rockingham West oz. The wreck is marked by name on the charts still. My friend from work lived in Orizaba Road named after the ship. good luck olewill

hi william h
not quite sure what you mean by
"I would suggest that perhaps one minute or less will be enough for the charge current to the engine start battery to diminish leaving lots of charge capacity for the service battery"

i suspect its that if your service batteries are flat then all power from start battery will go to them,
not so as the start battery is connected directly via an isolater switch to the starter motor in the usual way,the post about the isolater switch is for the charging circuit,2 very seperate items.apologies if i did not make this clear.

"This especially for us sailors who really want to stop that engine ASAP."

not sure what this meant, please enlighten me.all ii can say is i've been using the system i describe for 15 years its simple effective and cheap,i carry a spare switch with me in case it fails but worst case scenario is bolt all to one post.

orizaba is a mountain in mexico, also called star mountain i understand ,
