Re: B&Q dehumidifier

Hi
A de-thingy is just a fridge. It works by cooling the air below its 'dew point' so the water condenses out. That is why your car is wet even after a dry night. As you say if you leave your hatches open you will be trying to dry the Northern Hemisphere. They work better at low temps because mother nature has done some of the cooling for you. When the temp is below freezing there aint no water in the air - it has turned hard and fallen down.

Chaps ( & Chapesses)

On the basis of all the previous posts and the glowing recommendations I have bought the £75 B&Q dehumidifier.
I have read the instructions but they have raised more questions than answers.

I am a dehumidifier virgin. How do they work ? Why is temperature significant. What happens below 5 degrees C ? Does it give out heat or just shut down?

Will I be able to afford the electricity? Whats the most economical way to use it ? Does the setting knob work like some sort of dampness thermostat ? What setting should I use for a 31 footer?
I have previously relied on ventilation to keep the boat reasonably dry in the winter. Presumabley I should now make sure my hatches are shut or I will be trying to dry out the South coast.

Sorry to have so many questions but I think I must have been off sick the day the explained humidity in school !

Under 5 degrees C the refrigeration coils freeze and it stops condencing.

That is the schoolboy answer, because it happened to my dehumidifier in my new conservatory, whilst trying to help it dry out.

The only way I could keep it working was by putting a heater in with it!

Re: B&Q dehumidifier

Both the above responses really say it all.
We have used the same device for a few years - but always fire it up in the winter along with a small electric greenhouse heater - also from B&Q.
If you don't use a heater when it is below 0 degrees the dehumidifier coils will always freeze up.
Cheers
JOHN

Re: B&Q dehumidifier

I'm sorry about this thread getting spread over four different posts. We've fixed the problem but will have to 'put up with' this split for now. Now that it's fixed it shouldn't happen again.

Thanks for your patience,

-Keith
