Hi
Wonder if anyone can help. (I should say my engineering skills are zero so bear that in mind when suggesting what I should do). Although the head end of my fairly ancient mariner has come back to life despite leaking fuel badly when tap is on, it had stopped passing water. The engineer who serviced it last winter advised that the leg was corroded on and couldn't be removed hence he didn't change impellor. Decided I had nothing to lose so managed to separate leg with some violence. Actually its just the bit form the anti-cavitation plate down with a long chrome tube that fit inside the leg. Impellor looks OK so tried to clean out passages a bit and now trying to reassemble. The bottom bit has a long chrome tube attached with a square section attachment inside that goes into the leg which is attached to the head unit. Also a hole for attaching a tube which is presumable water uptake. Problem is I can't get the tube to engage with whatever is at the top of the leg - any ideas?

Sounds the same as my johnson 3.5. Square peg on a shaft inside a long tube. There is nothing difficult but it is a bit fiddly getting it lined up. Thet ube just slides in to a rubber socket you should be able to see it with a torch. Put the square plug on the shaft and slide onthe tube, attach it to the lower section of the leg. Push it all up and line up the water tube try to feel it engaging. A bit of grease on everything helps. If it doesn't push in to place turn the engine slowly with the pull cord while pushing the lower leg up. You should feel it engage.

Well the odd thing is I've got it so it won't go on fully, even with a whack from a rubber mallet, but it must be connected because pulling the cord turns the propeller!
