Re-assembling the raw water pump for a Ynamar 2 gm20F. I replaced the shaft and now want to re-assemble.

When I dis-assembled I found some white stuff on the shaft where it passed through the water seal. Lithium grease?

Any idea what I should use when
1. On the bearings
2. Where the shaft passes through the seal

Cheers

Probaly waterpump grease or some other waterproof grease, use waterproof grease. (stern gland etc).
Use KY jelly on the impellor. (water desolving gel.)

Could be emulsified oil/grease.
The bearings are normaly double sheilded ones and dont have any additional grease packing. If you are trying open faced ones then standard grease will be fine (beware that the bearing will be open facing the pulley and will fail quickly if you use this type of bearing).
Shaft lube with same grease but only small amount.
Also put a new water flinger ring on (rubber washer)

Raw water pumps, dont often or ever, in my experience, have open ball races. Neither do trailer bearings, they have seals on the inside aswell as the caps, which often have a hole in the end for expansion. Which as a tip for folks who have them with a hole in, drill 21/64 th's and tap 1/8 BSP and insert a grease nipple, then you can grease your bearings, without stripping the hub down.
