That’s going to sting a bit But seriously, I get rid of it with a green kitchen scourer, after the brushing for the soft bits. That only needs doing every few months if you keep it clean-ish between times

I see what I said there! I have used the green kitchen scourer but its hard work, once in the water I try to use a scrubbis at regular intervals but its never enough.

The black compound is probably copper oxide (cupric oxide). I am not sure why this form should occur in seawater but my copper plated propeller also turned black. You could try reacting with dilute hydrochloric acid but go very carefully, test a small area first. Copper(II) oxide - Wikipedia Copper(II) oxide - Wikipedia

I assume that is the case, although my photo here Copper plating a propeller seems to show no fouling at all on the black area.

The blade that is blackest seems to have the better result as you say.

So to recap - Just use scouring pads or a sanding pad to just ajitate to copper coat coating
thinking sanding pad as it would be quicker obviously when the boat is on the hard

We did ours yesterday. Or rather, I did,. Ours is best done in about a metre of water, though if I had a keel boat, I’d do it on scrubbing posts. A crane out and jetwash being the expensive option.

On our boat it's a dirty brown colour and green and even the brown areas seem to repel growth. No idea how that works but it does. But yes don't abraid unless you really have to, its pretty thin.
