I am planning to depart Camaret today to get through the Raz and on to Audierne. My plan is to get to the tidal gate at HW Brest -45 mins which is bang on slack before the tide starts running south. The only point for concern is that the forecast is for F5 southerly for most of the day. Conventional wisdom would say that everything should be ok, just looking for some thoughts from those of you with greater experience of the Raz, mainly about what sea conditions I can expect?

F6 with F7.

Southerly wind.

Southerly swell that has had a few days to build.

If you are late the wind over tide will not be good.

If you havent been thru there before then how about leave for 2 days and have a walk around town and over to the atlantic war museum.

It's not a long window and you'll be punching getting to the Raz, so arriving late is distinctly possible, which will not be fun. Even if you get through OK, with F6 or so south plus swell, the entrance to Audierne could be pretty exposed, even dangerous. St Evette (just to the SW) might be a better bet, but it can get swell with a southerly.

Suggest you spend the day relaxing, as Comrade Rouge suggests. And perhaps cock an eye at some of the postcards of the Raz in wild mood. That's a better way to see it.

Departure time passed and supping a beer.......

Thanks all for reinforcing what i already knew really!

If the family ask, the postcards and YouTube clips are somewhere in Scotland!

Good choice as others have implied it would not have been very nice probably 'orrid . . . . . NW'ly tomorrow and a bit lighter on Tuesday are much better days to go for it.

On another note, personally I think Audierne is not that great, others may disagree but if it were me I would go right on past and straight to the Isles de Glennan saving Audierne for a short stopover on the return perhaps.

I really like Audierne. A pleasant and unpretentious town with some good places to eat and a very accommodating marina with excellent shelter.
