I have a Raytheon RL70 Radar / Chartplotter and it will not pick up a GPS signal or fix ?

Has anybody any ideas or a suitable replacement?

The chart plotter is linked into the DSC radio and that cannot get a Lat and Long either.

The boat is a Bavaria 40 and is there a suitable unit that would fit into the hole created for the RL70C otherwise i will have to fill the gap.

Is there also any Marine electronic companies that people have used in the Southampton area that supply and honest service that they could recommend to me.

Thanks !!!

any gps will in-put a signal to the plotter.
or buy a raystar gps antenna

I've just replaced an RL70 from the steering console on my Beneteau. The nearest suitable replacement size is Lowrance HD7. It will require an additional backing plate as it's slightly smaller in width. The HD resolution is impressive. Alternatively, I still have a fully working RL70 if that's of any interest?

The RL70 does not have an inbuilt GPS receiver, so it gets its fix from either a seatalk or NMEA GPS. Generally they are fitted with a Raystar 120 which may be rail mounted or flush mounted to the deck. If you have one of these they have an led on them indicating their status.

Have a look and compare flash's with manual it will tell you if its seatalk or NMEA. If the GPS is faulty its a lot cheaper to replace than the display.

If both the Radio and the Chartplotter are not getting a fix it sounds like it could be a problem with your GPS aerial. I am sure I read somewhere that the Raymarine aerials (at least the older ones) have a battery in them that eventually needs replacing. Maybe that's the problem?

If you search on the Raymarine website it sounds like this knowledgebase answer may describe your problem

RS120 - NO FIX being reported on Pathfinder Series Display or Multifunction Display

We don't know what sort of GPS device the OP has. However, as an aside, Raymarine's approach to the frequent failure of the Raystar 120 is less than helpful. My Raystar 120 died (just out of warranty of course) and Raymarine declined to repair it as "it's a sealed unit, Sir, and can't be repaired". I bought a Raystar 125, purely for the convenience of SeaTalk connectivity, but if that fails it'll be the last Raymarine GPS sensor on my boat.

If the OP's radar/plotter is still in working order, the cheapest solution is sailorman's of just getting a basic GPS and connecting it up. This will give him the same system as I've been using for 11 years. The only modification we had to make was to halve the Baud rate so that the VHF would accept it. If he wants to update to a modern set with its ability to incorporate AIS and so on, then it is going to cost a fair bit.
