I wanted to go down the raymarine C series route at last years boat show but the unhelpful sprog on the stand could only offer 'you'll have to buy a new one mate' when asked about linking in my current (Excellent and working) R10X set to the new kit. Needless to say I now won't touch raymarine with a bargepole, that aside, does anyone out there know if its possible to piggyback a signal from the radome to SeaPro? if it is, how? I've linked in the Gps and other bits of disparate kit, this would be the icing on the cake (and cock a snook at Raymarine)

If the R10X has MARPA (I've got the R20X and it has MARPA but can only track one target), then it should be able to output the NMEA ARPA sentence, which you can use with Seapro. As far as I am aware, it's not possible to get a full radar overlay on Seapro - only the above. I looked into this last year. The only options I found for radar on PC were RayTech software with an expensive additional box of tricks or Nobletec. I came to the conclusion that is was an unnecessary luxury and then the most cost effective route would have been using a C Series display and forgetting about the plotter on the PC.

Just because you had an unsatisfactory conversation at a boat show (renowned as being lousy places to seek accurate info), it seems a bit irrational to turn your back on the brand which arguably makes the world's most successful range of leisure marine electronics.

not really a slight over-reaction, but a stand against big business's shoddy service and expectation that they can milk us for new kit by not making new kit backwardly compatable. Microsoft manage it for heavens sake and they aren't exactly exemplary in their service! nasa managed it when I changed from my old wirly thingy depthsounder to a new digital one it just pluggedstraight in to the old transducer and worked first time. nimea has been around for years as has arpa the R10x manual gives the details so why can't a manufacturer of raymarine standing manage a bit of backwards compatabilty. because they want us to keep buying their new kit all the time. Yes the boat show is notorious for bad advice but his is their shop window to the world so what can they really think of us yachties when they put a brainless sprog on thier stall! smacks of indiference and conceit to me.

Well - I think you have to give them some credit.
We had a problem with our ST50 tridata at the beginning of the year.... removed it and took it into Raymarine for advise - the screen was going (not a big issue) and the main board had failed .... they could repair it all for around £230 or offer us a new ST60 tridata (display only) with a good discount for trading in the ST50 - still more than the repair for the ST50, but comes with years warranty etc etc ... so we went for the new ST60 ... only to have it struck by lightning a couple of months later /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but thats another story....

I think it depends who you get to speak to - certainly they will try and sell you new kit - but a bit of percistance should get you other options.
I would not be supprised if the old raydome is not compatible with the newer displays - but it depends which bit is not compatible - just connectors or the actual signals between the units?

We looked at RADAR over last winter, but didn't do any more about it - I think we'd've probably gone for the C80, but couldn't agree on mast or transom mount for the scanner! ... whatever kit we get now I hope will be a Radar/chartplotter and capable of displaying AIS data - I know Talbot said single point of failure, but we don't have as much room at the chart table as he does and TBH what is the likely hood of failure of the display system over the probability that other bits of electrics will fail?

I give them credit for producing excellent kit, the R10X is one piece of kit I wouldn't be without, it really is an excellent device and probably the one we refer to most of all. But a little bit of backwards compatability surely its not too much to ask

Had an ST50 screen go black due to water ingression a few years ago. It was already several years old. Raytheon repaired it free of charge. Can't complain at that.

the R10X

was produced for Raytheon by JRC and badged by them.

I've found Raymarine extremely supportive - I've used their autopilots since 1978 and their service has, except when they were part of an international conglomerate, been very good.

However their new range of radar/plotters is possibly not the best on the market, and certainly not the best value.

What's the best value then? I reckon a Raymarine C120 radar/plotter (12" screen, 800x600 pixels) plus a 2kW radome for under £2000 is pretty good value.
