I'm looking at a boat with a Raytheon R10 Radar I'm not too familiar with any Radar system. Can anybody tell me if the R10 is any good please? I have done some limited research on it and it seems to be an old system. If I were to buy the boat would I need to change it? I understand from the owner its black and white not a colour system is this going to cause me problems in any way??

From memory I think they are green on black, "keep off the green bits" perfectly good set does what it says on the tin, basic one function nothing else to worry about.

Firm believer in if it works and is reliable, don't change it ... not sure about your experience level, nor cruising ground and intention but as you do not have experience, I'd use the equipment to get familiar with radar systems on-board ... and do use it frequently... clear days as well and compare the radar picture, adjust settings etc., and compare this to what you see.

As your horizon expands, you'll get a good understanding of the use & benefits, then you can make a more informed decision about replacement values etc. A reasonable radar today will probably set you back between £1 - 1.5K ... better ones >£2.5K ... and you'll quickly get into discussions around standalone radar and combined radar / chartplotter etc.

All IMHO of course ... and perhaps worth stating at this juncture that I am not one that need to have the latest gadgets on-board .. :)

Good luck!
