Raynet network switch

Ethernet signal tester is well worth a tenner when doing cable work . Only works if you have rj45 plugs.ag each end obviously.

Mine are RJ45 one end and Raymarine Raynet at the other, so I can't use a tester. There are only 3 of them, and only a few metres long. I test them by plugging them in to my Raymarine kit on my living room floor. If they work, they're good to go. I can understand the need for testing when wiring a building with multiple long cables poked under floors and behind walls.

If you’ve got live Raymarine in the raynet end, you could also plug the rj45 into any network switch, or even your router, and check that the light comes on.

The RMK-10 external keypad arrived today so I've just connected my not so vast network of 2 Axiom displays and the keypad into my weeny 5 port router to see if everything works like it should, and it does. (y)

Next question - what extra toys can I plug into the spare 2 ports on the router?

A Raymarine Quantum radome??

Laptop running OpenCPN or something that can record all data and compile your own yacht polar.

A radar is possible in the future. It would have to be either something Raymarine or something that an app on the Axiom+ display can talk to, like a video camera. The data going along Raynet is via a proprietary Raymarine protocol, so while I could tap into it, I can't interpret it. I can read or write data to or from the instruments via SeatalkNG as it's mostly NMEA2000. I've already done that in this project...

Anchor watcher YAPP - remote boat monitoring from a mobile phone

which went down here like a lead balloon and didn't garner any interest.

I’m just about to go through a similar exercise as Angus McDoon, has anyone any updates which may be useful given technology changes? In terms of the RJ45’s should they be screened versions, again any recommendations for plugs and crimped appreciated as original links are now dead.

You don’t need screened plugs, and Angus's pass through plugs, where ypu poke the wires right through, ate a good way of knowing they’re in the right order, and will make contact. properly when crimped. He got a good deal on his pliers, mine cost about £75 15 years ago.
