Raymarine Voyage Planner Software

Hi,

On the Raymarine site at http://www.raymarine.com/view/?id=3783 it says :
Users of Raymarine A, C, and E series MFDs which were delivered with embedded ready-to-navigate Navionics charts, or new e- or c-series MFDs delivered with a Ready-to-Navigate plug-and-play chip, are entitled to receive a duplicate copy of their region for use with Raymarine Voyage Planner software.

I have a qualifying Raymarine e7 but I'm not sure I understand this, does it mean that if I buy the Voyage Planner software it will automatically download a chart corresponding to the free Navionics Silver EU chart that came with my e7 ? Or what ?

What use is Voyage Planner if you don't have a free chart ? Does one normally connect to the chart in the e7 and so the free chart allows VP to run on a non-connected PC ? Or is VP useless until you spend on some chart licences for your PC ?

VP is $49 which takes some of the glow off the "free charts" offer but I canot find anywhere on the Raymarine website where it tells you how many machines you can install it on ? Anyone use this combination of software and device (e7) and care to give me the low down on it ?

Many thanks,

Boo2

Just came across this thread again and thought I'd post a reply to my own questions :

The answer is "yes". If you have the relevant offer enabled on Raymarine's website then VP will download the charts for the Navionics Silver EU card from the web and install them on up to 2 PCs.

If you then buy further Navionics cards (I think they need to be at the "Gold" level or above) then you can also use the VP software to copy them onto your PC (I think you get more than 2 installations but I can't remember how many) and view them, set routes etc etc.

What use is Voyage Planner if you don't have a free chart ?
None. But then it's pretty much useless anyway. It's far and away the clunkiest piece of mapping SW I've ever used and that includes Fugawi UK v1 and v2 which are horrid.

I'm still looknig for a mapping SW that will permit the reading of my Navionics Silver and Gold charts but which can take an AIS input too and is as easy to use as Offshore Navigator, if anyone knows of one I'd be most interested to hear about it ?

Thanks,

Boo2
