Last trip of the summer our autopilot suffer a sudden fault with the rudder position: despite the sensor being dead ahead the computer saw it as 20 degrees to port.

Nothing corrected it. Local Raymarine guy has spoken to Raymarine who are certain that the Analogue to Digital converter has failed.

I get that these are pretty basic computers: does anyone know if that’s a) likely to be the case and if it is can the component be replaced?

Back in the dark days when we had a sail boat, our Raymarine rudder sensor failed. This was displayed as a 40 degree input and so the autopilot just want to turn in circles.

From memory it is a common enough fault and can be diagnosed with a multimeter. I will see if I can find a link on google.

We fixed our problem with a new rudder sensor.
