Raymarine Tiller Pilot ST1000 or 800? Confused!

Tiller pilot came with boat. Can't work out from Raymarine manuals which model it is. The case says ST1000. On start up the LCD screen displays 800 before showing the course.

Did the 800 have an LCD screen?

As far as I can see from the manuals, the ST1000 can steer to a wind course, or waypoints and the 800 can't as it does not interface... but confusingly the unit, depsite displaying 800 does have a seatalk wire. However, I can not seem to access any of the calibration / light, input mode functions either.

Ideas?

I once purchased an 800, and I am virtually certain that the then difference from a 1000 was no display screen and no seatalk connection. ie it had a 2 wire connecting lead. Yours appears to be the 1000. However, on a 2000 that I later owned, I can't remember it displaying a model number on start up, so the display of 800 that you get seems odd.

Nope, definately reading 800 for a few seconds and then the display reads totally fine for course anc changes accordingly.

Just to muddy the waters a little I have discovered that there was an ST1000+ which as far as I can see does not appear amongst Raymarines list of manuals.

It had round (or oval) buttons and a digital display. Features included Sea Talk and NEMA compatibility for wind, GPS and Decca and full user calibration.

There was a matching ST2000+ but I do not know if there was an 800 in the range.

They were on sale around 2000.

I have a very dim memory of this coming up on here in the past - I seem to recall that the electronics are common to several models, and need to be told which body they're in. I'm sure in the instance I'm thinking of, the answer was a secret key combination to let you reset this.

Have had a quick try at searching, but couldn't find it.

No, the ST1000+ is the current model. I'm not sure what difference there is between the ST1000 and ST1000+ models, but both manuals are available for download from the Raymarine UK site. (ST1000 manual is in the discontinued products section)

The '+' after the model number indicates NMEA compatibility, in addition to seatalk. IIRC, they will have a connector with 5 or 6 pins rather than the 3 pin connector of the earlier models.

[/ QUOTE ] I had not realised it had been around so long. I found it in an ancient chandlery catalogue so assumed it was an osolete model.

Ah a secret key combination! That would make sense. I guess for economy they just used the same PCB.... great, so now all I need is the key combo.

Any ideas guys?

This question and answer on the Raymarine site might be relevant to your problem as well.

A-Ha! so I didn't imagine it (but may have forgotten where I saw it....)

From your link (in case I ever go looking for this again):

Your ST2000 thinks it is an Autohelm 800. It has been reset for some reason. There is a way to change this through button pushing:

Hold in the +1 and -10 keys for ten seconds . Unit will display type setting, i.e. 800. Release the keys and hold them in again for another 10 seconds until the display begins flashing the type setting. Toggle this setting to the appropriate type with the plus and minus keys. Repeat holding in the +1 and -10 keys for another 10 seconds to exit this calibration mode and save the changes to the settings.

Just brilliant - you guys are the best. I love these forums!

Would you believe that a certain electronics service centre in my locality told me that it was a dealer service issue - I pressed him assuming that it might just be a jumper or dip switch or something on the pcb and explained I was happy to take it apart... but he said "It is not something that a non-technician could do"

Lying s**t!

Cheers all.
