I have a Raymarine ST6001+ autopilot which has become very erratic. When I return to the boat after a couple of weeks the heading can be as much as 40 degrees out. I have checked the deviation and reset the heading and all is good for an undetermind time and then it drifts of again. There is no new lumps of metal near the flux, so I cant understand why its happening. Has any one out there any experience of this? I am missing a very obvious point? Or do you think the fluxgate compass is just US? Any comments appreciated.

I did try that but there was a time gap between re alinement and the turning circles. Thanks for the advice I will give it a try this weekend.
Is there a lock I can press once the heading is sorted?

I have had the same thing with a ST7002 and S3G course computer talking to a Raymarine rep he said that it was a known problem and they had some faulty EPROMS on sending the S3G unit back to Raymarine they ran it for 5 days without drift but did reprogram it and updated the software to the latest release. So it may be worth talking to Raymarine I think the problem is most likely in the course computer rather than the control head.

I have just got back from Poole, where I have picked up my ST6001 following repair.

The fault sounds similar. The heading reading would slip with a gradually increasing error, eventually after 2 hours the autopilot would read No Data and stop working.

I found an earlier thread on testing the Fluxgate, simple tests with a meter.

It proved OK, so as instructed I took the ST6001 to a Raymarine agent, Greenham Regis. They straightaway diagnosed it as an original manufacturing error, one of the capacitors was put on the board the wrong way round. Apparently a batch was produced like this, they are OK for a while then sudenly fail.

The capacitor has now been replaced and hopefully all will be well when I re fit it.

Having worked my way through the manual I thought it might be time to talk to a Raymarine agent! Thanks for your comments.

or even Raymarine themselves.

and cut out the message boy. They owe you some for the trouble their poor QAS has caused, and the agent might, understandably, resent having his time taken.

I've always found them extremely supportive in the 37 years I've been dealing with them, with some slippage from grace during the Raytheon years.
