Raymarine ST60 Tridata calibration failure.

I have a ST60 Tridata which early last year worked but refused to go into calibration mode. It was repaired by the Service Centre at Wareham, as Raymarine would only sell me a new I-series unit. Till now it has been working again correctly.

On launch this year it is showing ultra-low speeds - max 2 knots when doing 7+, so today tried to calibrate it. It correctly goes into calibration mode, and I have set the depth offset correctly. However I have completely failed to calibrate the log, which I usually do by using a "set to match GPS SOG" function in a virtually current-free area - this option doesn't now seem to appear anywhere in the calibration screens. The Seatalk bus is certainly getting GPS SOG, as the Graphic display will read SOG.

Given up for today: I'll try again next week, but anyone else had a similar problem?

The only suggestion that I can offer is to check that the Tridata is showing a sensible water temperature. if it isn't then the thermistor in the log transducer has failed. This causes the log display to go into "slave" rather than "master" mode.
If this is the case it can be fixed by a resistor across the thermistor terminals.

The thermistor was replaced with a 10K resistor on the back of the Tridata about ten years ago. Water temp reading has always been about 25C since, still was today.

According to the manual it's in User calibration: I was going through the manual as I did it (repeatedly!).

The manual does however say "Use the Adjust to Speed Over Ground (SOG) screen to automatically set the current speed to SOG (if available from SeaTalk). I am now wondering if although SOG is displayed on the graphic ST60 it's not getting through to the Tridata. I'll look at connections if I can get back to the boat tomorrow, though I have to work for a while first.

MAY have been wrong about following the instructions correctly yesterday: slightly difficult to do with the boat under sail in a nice breeze and manual pages flapping about. This afternoon whilst moored went through instructions and procedure again, and to select STW=SOG needs a double-button-press, which needs to be very much simultaneous to lock in. Will take boat out later in week again and try again.

If anyone ever searches this thread the following may be of interest.

After another failure to calibrate and speed still reading ultra-low, spoke to Raymarine tech support who suggested the likely cause was magnets in paddlewheel (now 14 years old) losing magnetism. Bought new paddlewheel repair kit (about £45) and fitted today. No change.

Tested system by swapping ST60 Tridata instrument head for a newer ST60+ Tridata head, which reads speed OK now. Fault pretty clearly in head unit.
