I've just come across this website offering spare electronic bits for the ST50/60 MHU at reasonable prices.
http://www.micrio.com/category/5-raymarine-parts.aspx

You can buy the components if you can do your own repair -
The direction sensor uses 2 chips RS components 650-548 (ca £20 each :( )
The speed sensor uses 1 chip RS 181-1463
The bearings are RS 612-5739 (these are quality stainless ones, you can get much cheaper ones from RC model shops but maybe lower quality and not stainless) 2 for each sensor

There have been previous forum threads on this if you can find them but I haven't seen the micrio link before.

Here is another useful link http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=38251&d=1330810870 (to a document to download) giving all the connections and voltages.
I'm not convinced about the need to align the wind vane module a particular way, I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere else.

If you want to connect up for test without going up the mast. you can use a 5 pin DIN type B (240 degree pin spread) audio connector socket such as Maplin HH35.

Maybe I didn't line them up properly, but I fiitted a set of these a while ago and they were completely shot after 12 months. Disappointing.

Fantastic, I have just stripped my unit due to seized bearing on the wind direction side. Also a bit of a tear on the wind vane, is it possible to but a new plastic wind vane. I have just done a temporary repair, freeing off the bearing and glueing the vane. Thanks to your info I will buy new bearings ready for the next time it stops.
Best regards
John

Just bought a faulty mast head unit on eBay. Strange how a Google search so often brings me back here!

Maplin DIN Socket 5-Pin B Order Code: HH35Q £1.59 each plus P&P
http://www.maplin.co.uk/chassis-din-sockets-951

CPC Order Code: AV15019, Manufacturer Part No: PSG01561, £1.48 for 5 free P&P
http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg01561/metal-chassis-sockets-din-5p-240/dp/AV15019

I was going to offer the spare ones, but hardly worth it.

I gave Maplin as a handy reference, not a recommended supplier!

CPC's T's & C's say £5.95 + VAT delivery charge on orders under £29.99 + VAT - is the free delivery a temporary special offer?
Doesn't Farnell have a £20 minimum order now? At least for casual users.
Similarly with RS, no min order but unless you have a business account, the delivery charge of £4.99 (I think) under £20 goods means Maplin/ebay works out cheaper.

And the Maplin reference was handy, thank you. But the code wasn't quite right, hence my post.
Yes the CPC free P&P is temporary, but they keep extending it.
Farnell don't have a minimum order if you say you are a company and use a "Corporate Credit Card"
I got caught out by the RS P&P this morning (buying 6 bearings, thanks again). Didn't notice it, and my order was a few pence under £20. I asked if they could cancel the order, but they said no.

Really? Looks right to me - 240 degree type.
It's HH35Q, the search facility doesn't like HH35. Note that some manufacturers call this a 5-pin 60° DIN.
