I looked at comments on here a few years ago when making a similar decision. Not much in it but opted for an ST2000 in the end. The ST1000 was man enough for my boat but I read that the bigger model had better Meccano inside. I cobbled up a clear plastic sleeve to keep spray out but it hasn't really had enough of a dowsing to test it.
On the other hand, a chum who's an electronics engineer says that Simrad are a much bigger outfit when considered globally and that build quality is better.

The original post was over 7 years ago so I'm sure the poster will have decided by now. Since I posted on this I have had both Tiller pilots and I would say the Raymarine is a far superior bit of kit to the simrad.

The Raymarine is fine..... so long as it doesn't get wet. Some might say this makes it unfit for the purpose for which it is sold; I couldn't possibly comment! If you buy one (and I wouldn't argue with the advice already given) I strongly recommend you make some sort of waterproof cover for it.

Cling film and clear pallet wrap have worked fine for me, with some PVC tape to make sure it doesn't unravel.

Does anybody have a view on which is better - the Raymarine ST1000 or Simrad TP10 tiller pilot? The Simrad is cheaper (£180.00 with the current 10% off in the Compass24 store). I don't have any Seatalk instruments for the Raymarine to hook up to and both accept NMEA input so I can hook up either to my GPS. My boat came with an autopilot but it is an early model and doesnt take an NMEA signal. Hopefully I can sell it.

Got through 3 ST1000 in 5 years due to circuit card corrosion and blown components (and several drive belt/cog wheel replacements). Had my TP10 for 3 years and no issues.
