Raymarine ST 2000 - advice please

Before I send the unit back (from Dubai to Blighty) I thought an enquiry on this forum might produce a simple solution and save me some time, cash and stress.

My ST 2000 has performed faultlessly for many years..... until I went below for 40 winks, leaving incompetent crew in charge on deck.

On my return, we had gone about but the ST 2000 was now malfunctioning.

The symptoms / facts are :-

The drive motor is fine, responds to manual input.

The heading displayed by the unit is way out and appears to be stuck, ie does not respond to changes of direction, hence the failure to correct/maiuntain the heading.

My question: From experience, is this a simple reset problem, or is it a return to factory job??

do a "Factory Reset" ( press & hold both Reds for 10 secs ) then go through the pages. the manual will be on the Raymarine site
then re calibrate the heading

Sounds similar to a problem I had with an ST2000 a few years back. In that instance, one of the three wires to the fluxgate compass had broken.

Open up the unit and check that all 3 wires are still attached.

If it rattles more than it used to it may be that the fluxgate has come off its pivots or they have broken, preventing it from responding to turns. The fluxgate lies in the bowl part of the lower moulding and sits onm a pair of plastic pivots.
I fixed one with Araldite to glue the bearing pivots back to the shell. Just undo the two halves of the shell.

I hope your crew hav'nt seen your post. Do you think they may have contributed to the problem. No doubt you have interogated them?

does it still say 2000 when you plug it in or does it say 800

There apperas to be nothing wrong mechanically. Internal inspection shows nothing pout of order.

It says 2000 on switching on.

The model is actually 2000+

I went through a recalibration and adjusted heading to match the boat compass.

However, when set to A, it does not respond, but does respond at a later time when you are say 60 degrees off course.

I am going to have another attempt since I now have the oroginal manual (I had one for 2000 which may be slightly different.

I suspect it is a fluxgate compass problem????

you need to do the 720 deg turns to auto align the compass

I completed the 360 and got the two readings, ie heading and error, and adjusted accordingly to match the boats compass????
