Howdo gang,

This is more as a matter of interest rather than a pressing issue but I have a Raymarine RL80C on the lower helm and a RL70C as a secondary up on the flybridge. I like the 80C but 'up top' the 70C is a bit small to see clearly when underway. Is there an economic way to repeat the display (Chart / Radar) on the 80c up to an alternative to the 70c, without replacing the whole kit and caboodle?
I'm always interested in creative solutions especially as the 80c with the chats that I have, works fine..

cheers,

Nick

why not buy an eBay Raymarine RL80C for 80 quid.
Maybe because they actually go for 4+ times that sort of price?
I've got three of those things on my boat, and if you point me to a decent one that can be bought for 80 quid, I'll have it just to keep it as a spare...!

Ah yes £80 was the starting price and postage added This guy has 2
Still not bad though at a “buy it now” for £125

Been there.
Finding another 80C is the only simple way to achieve your aim.
Loads of them on ebay/Gumtree and with some impressive prices.
Raymarines clever wheeze of doing their very best to ensure any new model is not compatable with any previous generation ensures a secondhand 70 or 80 is the only economic answer to keeping your existing system going. The alternative is throwing your old chartplotter and everything attached to it in the skip and replacing with a new system at eyewatering cost and with a confusing number of pointless techological advances 99% you will never know it does let alone use.
All your charts will of course need replacing.
Why a secondhand ancient MFD can command up to £400.00 when a new "Elements" be purchased for £425.00.

You also need to check the network compatibility. My last boat had 3 RL70s and 1 RL80. This was a long time ago when Raymarine were still supporting them. IIRC there is a high speed connection between them which had 2 versions - HS and HS2 - or something like that. Software versions was important to consider. But when it was sorted, I seem to remember that the system only needed a single chart card.
Hope that helps

If it helps at all I have a RC 631 plus at the lower helm with a card and a RL80C on the fly.
They both show radar and plotter, they both link into the autopilot as well.
As well as Ebay there's a Raymarine obsolete Facebook page.

Thanks a lot guys. Yeah at this stage I don't want to rip the whole lot out and start again because to for the cruising I currently do, the current system (all be it the 70c a bit on the small side) works well. Having worked in tech for a number of years I've almost become resistant to upgrading for the sake of upgrades. Not if I definitely won't use the functionality. (Much like smartphones where as much as I think 1 grand+ mobiles are very clever, the reality is I use a handful of apps, take some photos and that's about it). It's all great stuff but I'm not in a financial position to upgrade it just because it will look cool.
I'll keep my eye out on an 80c for not too murderous money..

If you are careful Gumtree can produce a some suitable kit, especially if local and you collect and pay cash.
Both ebay and Gumtree are packed with dealers selling "heritage" plotters but dealers need to make profit and cover any problems , need to find a private seller who has upgraded ?
Have frequently been aware of skippers who have upgraded complete sytems , the suppliers of the new kit have offered derisory amounts in P/X fro old kit.
Usually sold for paltry amounts. when I needed a RL80C , of course it had all blimming been long gone. :(

I have a few units after an upgrade, PM me if you want more details.

Thanks for offer but have since changed boats.

The new boat came complete with a all singing all dancing " Designed to Confuse" operating system.
The local Raymarine man hopefully will soon be calling round to find out why my rudder goes hard to port when the auto pilot is engaged.
This may be a built in design feature but cannot find the Go round in Circles option anywhere in the operating handbook which can be summoned up on the MFD screen.
The dead tree book seems to be missing this chapter as well.

Well I acquired an RL80C unit which hopefully somehow I can squeeze into where the 70C is located. One thing is certain these 20 year old units were built like tanks. Everything is very heavyweight. lb for lb you got your moneys worth..
