Thought that i should share for fellow android enthusiasts that Raymarine contacted me today on Twitter '@JKHPROTECH' to say that they have released RayView now for Android devices and E/C series devices! I hope that other manufacturers catch up and can offer something similar soon for their devices!

Presumably you have to buy several thousands of pounds worth of new Raymarine wireless kit, in order to repeat the display on your iPad.

Seems to defeat the object of owning the thousands of pounds worth of Raymarine kit in the first place.

Catch 22?

So we would have to " buy several thousands of pounds worth of new Raymarine wireless kit " to use it as suggested! :(

Why so cynical? Someone offers an additional capability for free and you moan that you have to invest in their kit first. If you don't want to then make do with iNavx.

This is a really good idea. Many of us like to have dedicated, purpose built nav kit like chart plotters for the convenience and security. On the other hand we also have things like phones and iPads on board for other tasks. It's great that you can on one device do your email, play some music and also quickly check position, ETA, traffic and so on. All from your bunk, the foredeck, the heads or wherever you are.

And it's free.

At the moment Raymarine have for once done a leading innovation. As soon as Gamin do this I will be all over it.

Didn't mean to start a debate; I saw it as good news for us sailors and the future of electronics and navigation.

As I need new instruments anyway as my old NASA gear is bashed/drowned/aged. I personally think it is great and echo the above poster's comments. We are in essence been given an extra station on board for monitoring for no charge if you already have the necessary equipment or thinking of upgrading.

Oh, that's interesting. I emailed them in November last year to ask them the following question :
Can you tell me whether you have any intention of making either an Android or Windows PC version of your iPhone app for the E7 Multifunction Display ?
and I got the reply :
Andriod already has the ability to stream the video via the android Media Player so no app required

The PC can also do this given the correct video streaming software/media player
So I don't know what the RayView app does on Android ?

Boo2

Eventually finished the installation of my e7 today, set up the digital yachts ais with no problems and connected the iPad all dead easy, all the routes I had plotted on the iPad went straight across. The raymarine app all worked with no problems, very pleased with the e7 at the moment, great piece of kit :))

Uhm, hazarding a guess it sounds like they answered the question, "What software do I need to play video from my Android device or PC on the e7?"

Edit: Unless of course the e7 uses a standard video stream that can be picked up by say VLC and it's simply a case of knowing the IP/format of the stream and sticking the details into the appropriate app on the PC or Android device. Though I haven't seen any documentation in relation to this anywhere?

Have to say we're very happy with ours, too. Small, but fits well in our relatively small boat. I don't really see the point of massive displays (unless you're going huge). If I want to see a big chart, I'll pull out the paper chart.

Nope I believe the wifi is already built into the news units.. E7, E9, E12, and C9, C12

Spec:
WiFi 802.11 b/g
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR power class 1.5

Yeah right! How many here do own one of these new expensive displays?
They are even so ugly that if I were to replace mine I would go for a different make.

Pointless.

Each to their own I guess, personally I cant see whats ugly about it.
£950 for a 7" touch screen singing and dancing piece of kit doesnt seem over the top when you look at others on the market.
