I am in the market to install a new radar alongside our new Axiom pro display, I am after some constructive input as to whether its worth shelling out the extra money for a Quantum 2 Doppler over the standard Quantum Chirp?

i get what the Doppler does and how it works but is it worth it?

Clearly it's got to better coz it got a 2 after it :-) am i going to kick myself if i get the chirp in years to come that i shouldn't have cheeped out?

We installed new Raymarine Axiom Pro and the Quantum Doppler 2 Radar last year. Is it worth it? Don’t know really because I haven’t used both but I wanted the automatic target tracking functionality that the Doppler provides because I thought it would be a good thing to have on a planing sports cruiser i.e. not having to slow down in a chop to select targets etc. Due to unforeseen circumstances we didn’t do as much sea time last year as we had envisaged but we did get out and the system worked well and I was pleased that we chose it.

The price difference between the two wasn‘t huge in the context of a complete electronics refurb and I took the view that I might regret scrimping. As it turns out we unexpectedly find ourselves selling the boat this year so someone else will get the benefit of our profligate approach! ;)

Bit of an aside to your question but I went for the Quantum with WiFi connection as opposed to wired connection. It works well but adds a level of unnecessary complication to no benefit. When setting up in the marina I felt the WiFi did not handle the ‘clutter’ well causing some setup problems.

Same decisions for me but the relatively small uplift in price and the added benefit in target velocity and heading identification swung it to Doppler for me. Delivery in next 6 weeks on new boat so won’t know how much better this will be but against my old E120 series, I suspect a different order of magnitude

We got the Quantum 2 Doppler and an Axiom 9 PRO MFD last summer. Only got to play with it for around 2 weeks in relatively quiet waters, but really pleased with the results and can confirm that the Doppler effect is indeed useful!

I'm sure the normal Quantum works just fine as well, but not sure if a few hundred bucks are worth not upgrading to the latest tech... The price difference is really marginal. Here some photos:

We've already upgraded a couple of customers from Quantum to Quantum 2. Unless budget is really tight, I wouldn't even suggest a Quantum now.

We always try to hard-wire a data cable from radome to display. Too many problems with WiFi connections. WiFi is best suited to the small fast fishers or Ribs, with a single display.

I had the Quantum on my last boat and found it excellent. Quantum 2 you do need the faster compass and auto setup to get the best out of it.

Incidentally I have a Quantum data and power cable for sale at half the Raymarine price. I know you can run it off the WI FI but if you are running a power cable up there you might as well run the data cable as well
