Raymarine plotter

^^ What he said

Fairline swap was purely economics.

New RM kit is superb. Garmin did pull out a bit of a lead but having used new ish stuff on a couple of boats over the summer I found it hateful and not in anyway intutive. The garmin route programming is particularly bizar.

I have a Fairline 58 fitted with Garmin kit - this is my second Garmin boat and the previous 6 Fairlines had Raymarine.

I would go with Garmin every time for one reason - truly amazing service from Nick at Garmin HQ Southampton. I never experienced anything like this level of care with Raymarine.

I am considering upgrading all 4 displays to the new 8000 series just have to get my head around the money.

Strange as I like Raymarine E-series, staying with Raymarine and my experience with Raymarine technical support is and has always been 100% spot on perfect!

I don't like the idea of the touch screens though, I've met a few people that have accidentally touched a wrong section at night and turned the display off or knocked it into a mode they couldn't escape from....

I have not used Garmin, but I have heard of some very positive comments from others on the forum.

I rest my case . . .

Care to expand on your disappointment with RM, I'm just about to upgrade mine and liked the look of the new RM gear. My understanding is that you can use the touch screen or the keys, it seems a good idea to have both. I'm opting for a new e series on the upper helm only and liked the idea of ipad connectivity as a repeater anywhere else on the boat

Being an iPhone and iPad user maybe I was expecting too much but I found the Raymarine not at all intuitive. But then perhaps it's not fair to make this type of comparison.

Looking at boat reviews and articles in various mags it seemed that Raymarine were/are the be all and end all of marine electronics, and that swayed my decision. With the big name and a big install cost I was expecting something simple, intuitive, and easy to use. It's not how I found it to be.

We did some homework quizzing the wallers on the various stands at the shows. Trouble is, the kit is so damn sophisticated I don't reckon half of them which are installed get used properly.

I feel we've been strung along a bit by the co who installed it as well, but that's not really relevant here.

There's a delay when ours is repeated on the Rayview software.

Thanks for the info, I had a play with the rm plotters at their stand at the recent boat show up here and was quite impressed but interested in your feedback, thanks.

One of the other things that appealed to me was that everything else on the boat is rm so I thought it would be easier to integrate a new plotter but it does seem like a bit of a minefield to the likes of me..

Silly me, I meant that the touch screen on the Garmin had caused people problems when it's a bit bumpy or at night or bumpy at night when an erroneous screen touch can cause problems.

The Raymarine E-Series does not have a touch screen and I personally would prefer to stay with button selection. As said before Raymarine technical and back-up service perfect in my experience.

I do feel that your point about these units being under utilised is real though. Not many people can or will use all the functions, I'm sure...
Well maybe 'Hurricane'! :o

The current E series does, and the previous did in "Hybrid Touch" guise, though I think they were also available without touch screen earlier on, though not sure of that.

The E series classic was soft keys only, E series wide and current E series are both touch screen and soft keys

The E does have touch, which you can disable. I have the new C rather than an E. Almost identical with the same processor, but without the touchscreen (which like you i don't want) and £700 cheaper. I use the ipad, which works seamlessly, for typing in text on its touch screen.

As I said earlier, I'm delighted with it and wouldn't swap it.

I stand corrected as mine has no touch operation. I like the idea of the iPad, would like to see that when we're about.

If you have the C-series, do you have repetition on the FlyB? as I though the C-series were single station only.

Lets have another glass of red at the weekend rog. New Cs are a very different beast. You can have 4 MFDs i think. I have one and it is on the fly as its waterproof. The ipad does downstairs. Give me a ring next time youre down.
