Hi guys, decided to upgrade the electronics on my boat starting with a new raymarine e127 Plotter, I need to get a transducer for this just wondering what would work best, in hull, transom, or thru hull, have a garmin on board at he moment. Not too sure about the wiring yet ( will collect the plotter tomorrow) but no doubt with a bit of help will be able to get it sorted. Also going to upgrade the radar radome , probably to raymarine rd 18 digital not sure if the extra expense of the hd for colour is worth the extra dish , any opinions guys?

Keith, the general consensus is that Garmin is easier to use and more intuitive. I had a small Garmin on my previous boat, but my Azi has Raymarine everything. I haven't yet had time to get to grips with it all, but will do so ready for next season. If you are going the Raymarine route, I hope it all works out, and will be interested to hear your progress.

not quite a consensus - I wouldn't swap my new raymarine kit.........

^^ What he said

Fairline swap was purely economics.

New RM kit is superb. Garmin did pull out a bit of a lead but having used new ish stuff on a couple of boats over the summer I found it hateful and not in anyway intutive. The garmin route programming is particularly bizar.

Hi ok my garmin. Was ok but very small I spent a long time weighing up the pros and cons and it just seemed that the RM kit had a bit more to offer, you can never be 100 % until you live with it I suppose! thanks for input,

Ok glad to hear that you think the RM kit is superb, looking forward to getting to grips with it!

As said above, Raymarine over Garmin every time, retail price of Raymarine kit is getting lower now, I find it much easier to use, one thing I really disliked is the Garmin auto pilot.

Can't comment on which is best but I have an unused raymarine bronze through hull transducer i've been meaning to put on ebay, if you're interested. It was bought six years ago, so things may have moved on though... I'll need to check the model.

Expectations between users vary too much to point you in any direction and personal prefs make one hate a model that others love. Add to this a portion of religion.

People here talk nicely about the services from PRS Communications in Harwich (no connection). If you get your budget and priorities right and talk to people like these, you'll get good advice and a better chance of getting the right product at the right price, IMO.
At the end of the day your decision might be made on facts not found on the web (like testing features hands-on). Although the manufacturers share charts from only three suppliers (C-Map, Navionics and Garmin), the result when running on devices in reality can be very different. I'd suggest you dig into charts and versions to decide if any has preference over the others as this will narrow the choise of hardware down. Only a few offer more than one chart supplier compatibility.

Apart from that many boaters live with whatever equipment a previous owner fitted. I have an old Garmin that works great for what it is, but I don't like their new GUI. Info that, presumably, is of no use to you anyway ;)

Have used both R+G extensively and both very good. Being of a gadget nature and a software fan I will be replacing the current network with all Garmin setup inc radar, autohelm, plotters, instrumentation and sonar. The VHF will be replaced with Icom. It's a bit like iPhone v Samsung, just personal taste and a personal preference for Garmin's slightly better ease of use and their PC & Tablet planning suites.

Ok thanks , I checked with raymarine today and they recommend a speed, depth, temperature transducer model A66090, what is the model you have?

My MF805 has a Raymarine C70 as original equipment. I never did like this. Maybe the newer ones are better.

When I fitted the radar, I used Garmin 18HD and the latest touch screen 750s chartplotter. Much better!

Have left the C70 installed as a kind of "back up".

+1 for PRS comms, really helpful.

Tell you what does irritate me is the cost of both. Surely the tech inside is incredibly simple. It's not like they have to work out a route like a car sat nav or am I missing the point? As some (far more tech savvy than I) people are now doing this with iPads for a quarter of the price does this not prove they are taking the p**s?

Transducer

Hi thanks for searching for the transducer, the one you have left, in hull, do you know if that does depth and speed, the bronze one thru hull would have done temperature as well, thanks
